The Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC hit another milestone for the Downtown Stadium on May 15 with the Topping Off Ceremony, placing the final steel beam atop the Sky Club.
Fans were able to watch the socially distanced ceremony from the safety of their cars as live commemoration speeches from Mayor Suthers, Ed Ragain, Robert Carr, and Jim Johnson took place.
"I'm really really excited about this," Mayor Suthers said. "I'm a sports fan, I've always dreamed of a downtown stadium, I think a lot of people have dreamed about a downtown stadium. Here we are, it's getting pretty close to reality."
Fans had the opportunity to take turns visiting the outside of the construction site the day before to make their mark on Downtown Stadium history by signing the last piece of structural steel placed and see the progress first-hand that's been made since the Groundbreaking Ceremony in December of 2019.
The Downtown Stadium is still safely undergoing construction in order to be completed by the Switchbacks' opening game in 2021 at the new 8,000 seat venue.
"It's a lifelong dream, it's a family business to some degree and we've been dreaming about this project for a long, long time," Switchbacks FC owner Ed Ragain said.
