(COLORADO SPRINGS, CO, March 12, 2016) The Colorado Springs Switchbacks recorded their fifth preseason win in as many games this Saturday by defeating University of Colorado-Colorado Springs 3-2 in the team’s lone home match before the start of the preseason.
The Switchbacks were once again able to get off to a quick start as Miguel Gonzalez was able to find captain Luke Vercollone inside the box who slotted it into the back of the net. The Switchbacks would continue to apply pressure in the attacking third with Mike Seth finding the back of the net to double the lead in the 18th minute following a rebound. UCCS would quickly respond three minutes later as Jake McAllister drove down the left side and found Josh Bernstsson who headed it down beating Devala Gorrick in the bottom corner. After giving up the goal, the Switchbacks turned the intensity back up where Miguel Gonzalez was able to fire a shot into the bottom left corner to re-double the lead going into halftime.
“We got a good result today,” goal scorer Miguel Gonzalez said, “the goal was good for me, I missed a few passes in the beginning but I think the goal really helped me out.”
UCCS was able to cut the lead in half again converting from the penalty spot in the 57th minute as Blake Barnes took the kick for the Mountain Lions. The Switchbacks would then make eight substitutions in the 61st minute to freshen the team up and get the subs more playing time. The Switchbacks would continue to apply pressure in the second half with a couple opportunities just inches wide of the post. UCCS nearly equalized toward the end of the match but Switchbacks goalkeeper Billy Thompson made a few key saves that preserved the lead and the win for the Switchbacks.
“I’m happy with the performance of the majority of the guys,” said Head Coach Trittschuh. “We have this whole week in California and we’ll sort out what we need to improve.”
The Switchbacks will travel to California next week to take on Ventura County Fusion, Orange County Blues, and LA Galaxy II in their final preseason matches.
