Ziggy the mountain goat came from the Rocky Mountains, looking to bring the fun and smiles to fans' faces on game day at Weidner Field. The Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC mascot has been spotted at community events and every home game since the clubs inaugural season in 2015. Rumor has it that he gives the best high fives in the world, but where did he come from?
When the Switchbacks first started, they knew a mascot was a necessity. But how do you come up with a mascot that is relevant to the team that the city can get behind? The Switchbacks set out to let the community decide by going to the art teachers of local schools with the Mascot Madness competition. A $200 cash prize was offered to the art department of the student that had their drawing selected. The winner was selected at the Switchbacks first ever exhibition game on October 18th, 2014.
The winner was revealed to be Riley Sorency from Widefield High School in Widefield School District 3. Riley sketched a mountain goat because it was unique and fitting with switchbacks being in the mountains.
Ziggy is still a fan favorite at Weidner Field and around town. He's made appearances on the Switchbacks poster series that are given out at games throughout the season as well as his very own Ziggy bobblehead giveaway during the game on May 26th, a 3-0 win over Saint Louis FC. Ziggy was also ranked the number four mascot in the league by the USL in 2017, gaining recognition around the league.
