Portland, Oregon (June 17, 2018) – The Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC come from behind to beat the Portland Timbers 2 on the road on Father's Day with an impressive second half.
Coming off of the 1-0 loss to the Swope Park Rangers at Weidner Field last week, the Switchbacks were looking to right the ship on the road in Portland against the Timbers 2. The game started quickly with the Timbers 2 creating an opportunity in just the second minute but they missed high. In the 10th minute, Shane Malcolm laid off the ball for Jordan Burt at the top of the 18-yard box but Burt's shot was blocked and deflected out for a corner. But just 8 minutes later, the Timber's Harold Hanson got onto the end of a bouncing pass from Modou Jadam and chipped his shot over the onrushing Steward Ceus to give the home side the 1-0 lead. Steward Ceus came up with multiple saves after the goal to keep the game at 1-0 going into halftime.
The second half saw the momentum shift in the favor of the Switchbacks. In the 51st minute, Karsten Hanlin had some nifty footwork to be able to find Jordan Burt on the top of the 18-yard box and Burt curled the ball into the bottom corner to equalize the scoreline. Only four minutes later, the same combination of Karsten Hanlin finding Jordan Burt proved fruitful when Burt fired his shot off the underside of the crossbar to put the Switchbacks ahead. In the 70th minute, Marty Maybin took a pass from Shane Malcolm 45 yards from the goal and Maybin did the rest beating a defender and holding off a couple other Timbers' defenders before hitting a powerful shot into the back of the net to double the lead. AJ Ajeakwa subbed on for Maybin and he kept the momentum going by getting an insurance goal in the 79th minute when he got behind the defense and slotted his shot to the far corner while megging a defender in the process. The game would end 4-1 after a strong performance from the Switchbacks in the second half.
The Switchbacks return home on June 23rd to face Fresno FC on fireworks night where the first 500 fans in attendance will receive a Switchbacks t-shirt courtesy of Springs Automotive Group. Tickets start at just $12 and are available here. Fans 21+ can get $1 beer the first 30 minutes when gates open at 6:00 PM.
