Colorado Springs, CO (April 1, 2017) – The Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC played rivals Oklahoma City Energy FC to a 1-1 draw Saturday night after a winter storm blew through Colorado Springs.
After a winter storm blew through Colorado Springs earlier in the day, the Switchbacks managed to get the field cleared and ready for their Saturday night clash with Oklahoma City.
It was Masta Kacher who got the scoring started for the Switchbacks in the 20th minute. Josh Suggs broke down the left side and found Shane Malcolm, who found Kacher. Kacher then made a short run and fired a rocket from outside the box to beat Cody Laurendi in the top corner. The lead wouldn't last long as Alex Dixon found an equalizer in the 26th minute on a bouncing ball in the box. Dan Jackson would come up a tremendous save just minutes later to keep the score level at 1-1 heading into halftime.
“I think the weather played a factor tonight," said goalkeeper Dan Jackson. "But, I think we handled it pretty well. We're a little upset we didn't walk away with three points today, but I think we've set ourselves up for next week in San Antonio."
As the second half progressed, so did the snow. As the storm picked back up, both teams saw their fair share of opportunities but neither were able to find the back of the net. Kevaughn Frater made a nice run where he would have had a one-on-one with the Energy FC keeper but he was flagged offside. Despite late efforts from both sides, the teams walked away with a draw and their first points of the season.
"I thought it was a good game," said Head Coach Steve Trittschuh. "I thought we turned a corner from last week, but we still have a ways to go."
The Switchbacks will now travel to San Antonio to take on San Antonio FC at 6:00 PM MT. Fans are encouraged to join the Trailheads Supporters group at Jack Quinn's for the official Switchbacks FC watch party.
The Switchbacks will return to Weidner Field on April 15th at 6:00 PM to take on Real Monarchs SLC. The first 500 fans in attendance will receive a beanie courtesy of Wells Fargo. Tickets are available here. For media pass requests, please contact Communications Manager, Joel Huber.
