(PUEBLO, Colo., March 6, 2015) – A pair of early goals by Luke Vercollone and Marty Maybin propelled Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC to a 3-1 victory against Colorado State-Pueblo University on Saturday night at Thunderbowl Stadium.
“We wanted to come out a little more intensely than we did at the Air Force game,” said Switchbacks Coach Steve Trittschuh. “They came out hard and intense and got us to another level of where we want to be in pre-season. We scored some goals and it was all in all a good exercise and a good result.”
The Switchbacks took the lead in just the second minute as Miguel Gonzalez’s cross from the right found Vercollone, who headed home. Eleven minutes later, Maybin made it two as Josh Suggs made a powerful run through the Thunderwolves’ defense and centered for the forward to sweep home.
Suggs, an offseason addition from Orange County Blues FC, said he was enjoying his new teammates and surroundings this preseason.
“I feel great honestly, it’s been easy adjusting to this group of guys,” Suggs said. “Everyone meshes well and we get along great.”
The Thunderwolves pulled a goal back eight minutes before halftime as they quickly broke out on a counterattack following a Switchbacks free kick and found the back of the net. Colorado Springs restored its two-goal lead with 16 minutes to go, however, as Aaron King scored from the penalty spot.
The Switchbacks continue their preseason schedule on Tuesday night when they visit the Colorado University of Mines.
