Colorado Springs, CO (November 4, 2016) – The Switchbacks are proud to announce the return of Midfielder Luke Vercollone for the 2017 season. After another successful year as the Team Captain, Luke is the first player to re-sign with the Colorado Springs franchise pending league and USSF approval.
This 34-year-old soccer veteran became the first player to reach 100 games in the USL during the Siwtchbacks 2015 season opener in Austin, Texas on March 28, 2015. Vercollone was the first signed player with the Switchbacks for their inaugural season.
“We are glad Luke will be coming back for his third season,” said Head Coach Steve Trittschuh. “We expect him to get back at the level he played at in 2015 when he was a finalist for MVP of the league.”
In 2004, Vercollone was drafted by the Columbus Crew but joined the New England Revolution as a developmental player. In 2006, he joined the Charleston Battery (USL). Then in 2008, he signed on with the Richmond Kickers (USL) and continued with the team through the 2014 season.
Vercollone was named to the 2015 First Team All League after he finished top four in the league in: points (37), points per game (1.42), goals (14), and assists (9). Vercollone also finished 6th for goals per game (.54) and 5th for assists per game (.35).
In the 2016 season, the Switchbacks continued to be a dominating force in the USL Western Conference. While Vercollone did not produce the same numbers as the 2015 season, he was instrumental in the success of 2016. His points (16), goals (6), and assists (4) dropped from the inaugural year. However, the determination, leadership, and outstanding moral fiber he has shown on and off the field has proven to be an invaluable asset to not only the team but the entire organization.
We are excited to see what 2017 holds for the Veteran Midfielder!
