Colorado Springs, CO (August 12, 2026) — The Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC advance to the semifinals of the Prinx Tires USL Cup with a dramatic 1 (4) – 1 (5) victory over Spokane Velocity FC in a PK shootout.
The Switchbacks fell behind early in the first half after conceding a goal in the 14’. Spokane #10 Luis Gil took a shot that made its way into the bottom right corner of the net to give the Velocity an early 1-0 lead.
Looking for an equalizer before the end of the first half, Switchbacks #6 Sam Williams sent a long pass down the pitch to #7 Jonas Fjeldberg, who dribbled past one Spokane defender before firing a shot that split two more and into the back of the net to even the match at one goal a piece in the 30’. The goal was Fjeldberg’s team-leading third of the tournament and sent the match into the halftime break tied 1-1.
The Switchbacks were relentless in their attempt to end this match in regulation, controlling 68.2% of possession while recording six shots and 41 final third entries. However, Colorado Springs were unable to break through before the full time whistle, sending this one to a PK shootout.
The Switchbacks converted all five of their penalty attempts, while Spokane made four. With a trip to the semifinals on the line, Spokane #20 Ibrahim Janis Covi missed the Velocity’s final attempt, sealing the victory for Colorado Springs in goalkeeper Christian Herrera’s return from injury.
Fjeldberg finished the match with three shots on target, while #37 Brennan Creek recorded three interceptions, and #24 Talen Maples won five of six duels.
The Switchbacks await tomorrow’s draw that will determine their semifinal opponent in the Prinx Tires USL Cup, before returning home to Weidner Field for a battle with Birmingham Legion on Saturday, August 15.
