June 13 – The Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC Unified Team earned an impressive 3-2 victory over Sacramento Republic FC on June 13 from Weidner Field behind two goals from Joe Morrow and one from Ella Miller.
The match was back and forth, with both teams trading goals throughout the first half. The Switchbacks jumped out to a 1-0 lead on Joe Morrow’s first goal of the night, shortly before Sacramento responded with a goal to tie the game at one goal apiece. It was not long before Morrow picked up his second goal of the night at the midway point in the first half to give the Switchbacks a 2-1 lead. The Republic continued to battle and eventually evened the score at 2-2 after capitalizing on a rebound despite an initial save from goalkeeper Candice Edmiston.
With halftime approaching, the Switchbacks were able to find an opportunity to score before the half. After a Sacramento clearance fell to Ella Miller, she launched a high-arching shot that found the back of the net to give the Switchbacks a 3-2 lead heading into the half, and ended up being the game-winning goal.
The second half featured a hard-fought defensive battle as both teams created multiple scoring chances. Augie Lara took over in goal in the second half and delivered several crucial stops, including a diving save to deny Sacramento’s last scoring opportunity of the night to secure the 3-2 victory.
The Switchbacks FC Unified team heads to Madison, Wisconsin, for a battle with Forward Madison FC on July 11.
