On Sunday, May 17, the Colorado Springs Switchbacks Unified team competed at the Special Olympics Regional Soccer Tournament at Central Park in Denver. The squad was split into two teams for the opening round of competition.
Switchbacks Team A, earned an impressive 8-0 victory over the Spectrum Skyhalks. The team put together a dominant performance that featured three goals apiece from Joe Morrow and Christian Campbell-Barrier, which were his first goals as a member of the Switchbacks Unified team, and an additional two goals from Yariv Ben-Naim. Goalkeeper Augie Lara had a massive impact in goal, coming up with several key saves to preserve the shutout victory.
Switchbacks Team B fell short to the Aurora Lightning 3-2. Xavier Lopez scored his first goal for the Switchbacks off an assist from first-year peer partner Alexsandro Arreguin-Nava, who later found the back of the net for his first goal off an assist from Ella Miller. Goalkeeper Candice Edmiston kept the match in reach up until the final whistle, turning away multiple scoring chances.
