Reno, NV (April 22, 2017) – The Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC played Reno 1868 FC to a 2-2 draw on the road after a stoppage time equalizer from Shane Malcolm.
Both teams had their fair share of opportunities early on in the match, but neither team was able to capitalize on their chances. Luke Vercollone saw his chance in the 7th minute go inches wide. The Switchbacks nearly put the Switchbacks on the board in the 38th minute as his shot hit the underside of the crossbar and bounced back out. Making his second appearance, Moise Pouaty would come up with a handful of saves that could have given Reno a much larger first half lead. Reno finally found their breakthrough in stoppage time in the first half as a handball by Sean McFarlane gave Reno a penalty kick. Reno would convert and take a 1-0 lead into halftime.
The Switchbacks would find an equalizer in the 58th minute as a Suggs corner kick found Josh Phillips who's header landed at the feet of Jordan Burt to give Burt his first of the season. The lead wouldn't last long, as Reno re-took the leader following a corner kick of their own. The Switchbacks would get a handful of chances in the attacking third but unlucky bounces and a few off -he-post would have the Switchbacks still trailing by one as stoppage time began. The Switchbacks would find their equalizer as another Suggs corner led to a goal as Shane Malcolm headed home the equalizer and the Switchbacks would leave Reno with a point.
"We are pleased with our fight and effort to earn a point on the road," said Josh Suggs of the draw. " But, we're upset we didn't come away with a win. We need to finish our chances earlier in the game to lock it up next time."
"It was a well-fought point on the road," said Head Coach Steve Trittschuh. "It's the first time we've been down in a game and came back to get a result. Looking forward to our two home games coming up as we continue to improve game by game."
The Switchbacks will return for a two-game homestand against Seattle on Saturday, April 29th and then against Tulsa on Friday, May 5th. Seattle's match will be the second poster series night courtesy of Weidner Apartment Homes. Tickets are available here.
