Colorado Springs, CO (September 17, 2016) – The Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC defeated Seattle Sounders FC 2 in front of a record crowd of 4,308 after a stoppage time goal by Mike Seth.
The Switchbacks wanting to build on their recent string of success, knew they had to win tonight to guarantee a home playoff game. The Switchbacks applied the pressure early and it was Rony Argueta who made a nifty move in midfield and fired a rocket into the top left corner to give the Switchbacks the early lead in the 8th minute. However, momentum would swing in the way of Sounders 2 as they found their equalizer in the 29th minute as Darwin Jones slotted it past a diving Devala Gorrick. The two sides would head into the break tied at 1-1 despite late efforts from both sides.
“It was a great goal,” said Rony Argueta. “My family, coaches, and staff have been telling me to just take shots whenever I had the chance. I saw the opportunity and I took it. Thank God it went in.”
The match would begin to get a little more physical as the second half progressed. Both teams had their chances and possession, but neither team was able to find a break through. The Switchbacks had multiple opportunities in the closing minutes but their shots either went just wide or over the bar. The Switchbacks nearly found the go-ahead just into stoppage time by Saeed Robinson just missed the shot wide left. The Switchbacks finally found the game winner about 3 minutes into stoppage time as Mike Seth and Saeed Robinson beat Seattle on a 2 on 2 after Robinson found Seth who slotted it past Bersano. The goal would be enough as the final whistle blew with the Switchbacks taking a 2-1 win at home.
“It was a fantastic win for us,” said Head Coach Steve Trittschuh. “We did let them into the game in the first half, but we really pulled it out at the end. The fans were great tonight, the team put in a great effort, it was all-in-all a great 90 minutes.”
The win puts the Switchbacks in first place for the moment depending on the result of the Sacramento Republic-LA Galaxy II match. Were Sacramento to lose or draw tonight or next week, the Switchbacks would win the Western Conference with a win next Saturday.
The Switchbacks will now travel to Orange County to take on current 9th place Orange County Blues. Kickoff is at 8:00 MT on Saturday, September 24th. The match can be seen live on https://www.switchbacksfc.com.
The win tonight guarantees the Switchbacks will be hosting a Western Conference Quarterfinal Match at Switchbacks Stadium. The match will be Friday, September 30th at 7:00 PM.
