Colorado Springs, CO (August 11, 2016) – The Colorado Springs Switchbacks moved into first place in the Western Conference with a 1-0 win at home against the Tulsa Roughnecks.
After a disappointing two-game road trip that only resulted in two points, the Switchbacks were determined to make the best of their three game home stand. In typical Switchbacks fashion, they came out applying pressure early on. The Switchbacks controlled the majority of the first half out shooting Tulsa 9-3. The Switchbacks would continue to apply pressure but their chances went unfinished as the teams would head into the break scoreless.
The Switchbacks would earn their best opportunity in the 50th minute as Miguel Gonzalez was taken down. Unfortunately, the Switchbacks would miss their third straight penalty as Alex Mangels denied Marty Maybin diving to his left. However, it would only take ten more minutes for Conor Doyle to score his first goal for the Switchbacks. Taeseong Kim was able to play a nice ball into Doyle who slotted home the shot to give the Switchbacks a 1-0 lead in the 60th minute.
“It was nice,” said Doyle of his goal. “I’ve been waiting a long time to score. It’s been over a year since I’ve scored. It wasn’t pretty but all that matters is that it went in.”
Despite efforts by Tulsa late in the second half the Switchbacks were finally able to hold on to a 1-0 lead to come away with 3 points. The Switchbacks now move into first place alongside Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2. The Switchbacks currently lead on goal differential.
“I’m glad with the three points,” said Head Coach Steve Trittschuh. “They made it tough for us to play our game. But, as I told the guys, I don’t care how we win these next three games at home, but we have to win them. We have a ten day break before our next match to prepare for our next two home games.”
The Switchbacks will return home on August 21st to face The Rio Grande Valley Toros at 1:30 PM. This will be the Switchback’s Military Appreciation Day.
