Salt Lake City, UT (August 8, 2016) – The Colorado Springs Switchbacks played Real Monarchs SLC to a 0-0 draw in the USL Game of the Week to finish the 2016 series at 1-1-1 between the Rocky Mountain rivals.
In the second of their 3 games in 8 days, the Switchbacks were hoping to bounce back after a 1-1 draw in Portland on Wednesday. The Switchbacks were able to get a few shots off early on but none of them quite contested the Real Monarchs keeper. The Switchbacks continued to apply pressure throughout the first half but weren’t able to capitalize on their opportunities. Despite holding the majority of possession, the Switchbacks weren’t able to get quality chances. The Real Monarch best first half chance came in the 25th minute as a knuckle ball from outside the box had to be punched away by Devala Gorrick. The teams would continue to battle but would head into halftime scoreless.
The second half was very similar to the first half. Both teams had their fair share of possession, but neither team was able to capitalize on their opportunities. Despite the tough offensive effort by the Switchbacks, goalkeeper Devala Gorrick would put on a stellar performance and was named the USLSoccer.com man of the match. Devala’s crucial saves in both halves would lead to the Switchbacks to earning another point on the road and put them in sole possession of 4th place in the Western Conference.
“It’s not the result we were looking for,” said Head Coach Steve Trittschuh. “But, another point away from home is positive. Now we need to take care of the games we have at home the next couple weeks. The players are looking forward to playing in front of our home crowd and our home field.”
“I’m please with out play and our continuous fight throughout the match,” said goalkeeper Devala Gorrick. “Our climb towards the top will only get stronger and we plan on taking care of our home games.”
The Switchbacks will return home on Thursday, August 11th to face the Tulsa Roughnecks at 7:00 PM. Tickets are available at https://www.switchbacksfc.com or by calling 719-368-8480 x1.
