Portland, OR (August 3, 2016) – The Colorado Springs Switchbacks played to a 1-1 draw against Portland Timbers 2, marking their 5th 1-1 draw of the season and the 4th since July.
Looking to bounce back after their 1-1 draw with first place Whitecaps 2, the Switchbacks wanted to prove that they belonged at the top of the Western Conference.
The first half saw both teams have their fair share of opportunities. It would be Timbers 2 with the best opportunity of the first half with a free kick just outside the box. Timbers 2 were able to strike the ball beautifully but luckily a diving Devala Gorrick was able to come up with a tremendous save in the 36th minute to keep the sheet clean for the moment. The two teams would head into the break scoreless.
It would only take 2 minutes into the second half for the Switchbacks to earn an opportunity to score. Saeed Robinson was taken down in the box to earn a Luke Vercollone penalty kick. Unfortunately the skipper hit the left post and the match would remain scoreless. The Switchbacks finally found their breakthrough in the 73rd minute as Miguel Gonzalez tore through the Timbers 2 back line and put the shot away beautifully. The lead wouldn’t last long though as Timbers 2 were able to capitalize on a free kick in the 76th minute to find their equalizer. The teams would continue to battle but in the end, the teams would walk away with a 1-1 draw. This would mark the second time the teams would play to a 1-1 draw in Portland, putting the Switchbacks at 3-0-2 all time against Timbers 2.
“It’s a tough result,” said goalkeeper Devala Gorrick. “But, it’s still one point on the road against a good team. Now we will put this behind us and focus on getting points at Salt Lake on Monday.”
The Switchbacks will now travel to Salt Lake City to Face the Real Monarchs on Monday, August 8th at 7:00 p.m. MDT. The match can be seen live at switchbacks.fc.com
