Saint Louis, MO (July 23, 2016) – The Colorado Springs Switchbacks fell 2-1 to St. Louis FC despite a solid second half performance by the Switchbacks.
Looking to bounce back after their late draw against Swope Park on Wednesday, the Switchbacks were looking for a win to stay at the top of the Western Conference. Unfortunately, it would be St. Louis FC who would take control of the first half. St. Louis nearly took an early lead in the 6th minute but the goal was called back for an offside call. Billy Thompson would continue to put in a solid effort in goal, having four first-half saves. But unfortunately, goals in the 35th minute and one in first half stoppage time saw the Switchbacks trailing 2-0 at halftime.
The Switchbacks would come out strong in the second half, controlling the majority of possession. It would be Marty Maybin who would get the Switchbacks on the board in the 55th minute as Josh Suggs played a nice ball just outside the six yard box that Maybin was able to finish, The Switchbacks would continue to apply pressure but weren’t able to finish their chances and walked away with a 2-1 defeat on the road.
“It’s another game where we shot ourselves in the foot, giving up two goals and having to fight back,” said Head Coach Steve Trittschuh. “With the heat and being on the road that makes it very difficult.”
The Switchbacks will return home on July 29th to face current Western Conference leaders, Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 at 7:00 PM.
