Fresh off a 2-1 in Oklahoma City, the Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC host San Antonio FC this Saturday afternoon at Weidner Field in the first game of the 2020 USL Championship season to be played in Colorado Springs.  The Gazette newspaper will be giving away cowbells to the first 500 fans as part of Fake Paddy’s Day and tickets are available HERE. $1 beers will also be on tap for the first thirty minutes after the gates open at 2:30pm MT.  

“I thought it was a very good performance – the guys did exactly what we asked them to do, they executed, and we could have been several goals up to the good,” said Switchbacks Head Coach Alan Koch when asked about the victory against OKC.  “Oklahoma City is a good team. They came back into the game, but I was proud of the character our guys showed to not push any panic buttons, weather a bit of a storm, then go on and get the win. We need to just keep pushing. It’s one week at a time.  We don’t set ourselves any goals beyond one week at a time. I think if you look beyond that, you’re losing sight of what your job actually is, so we’re just going to get ourselves ready for San Antonio, be focused, and hopefully come up with another good performance.” 

“I think we’re all very confident coming from a good result away from home, so we want to take the same confidence into our next game in front of our home crowd,” said George Lebese.  South African Lebese played all 90 minutes on Saturday in his first competitive action for the Switchbacks. “It’s our first home game and we’re very excited for that. We’re looking to do well and give the supporters something to cheer about.  We’re going to start preparing today and get information from the coach about what we’re going to work on this week – it’s exciting to be home.”

We don’t know what San Antonio will bring but if we control ourselves I think we’ll be fine.”

San Antonio started their 2020 USL Championship season on Saturday with an impressive and composed 1-0 win over the Real Monarchs SLC in Texas.  Canadian defender Callum Montgomery was named a starter on the USL Championship Team of the Week after the center-back notched the lone goal in the 1-0 victory at Toyota Field.  Montgomery fired home from the edge of the six-yard box after captain Luis Solignac smashed his cross across the face of goal.

San Antonio native and beard-enthusiast Matt Cardone has appeared in every season of San Antonio FC’s existence, and the former San Antonio Scorpion started and kept a clean sheet in the victory over the Real Monarchs SLC.  Cardone’s opposite number, Switchbacks ‘keeper Sean Melvin, notched four saves in his debut on Saturday against OKC including a brilliant stop on the hour mark. “I think the win gives us a lot of confidence,” said Melvin on Tuesday morning.  “It’s difficult to go on the road and get a result so I think that’s great for us and will help us build this week. It’s going to be nice to be home and play in front of the fans. For a lot of guys it will be the first time playing at this stadium and I think it will be a really good atmosphere and the guys are going to be really excited.”

At the time of writing San Antonio FC hold the final playoff place in the USL Championship Western Conference, as Head Coach Darren Powell’s team will go into their final match tangled in a seven-team battle to see which four clubs can clinch their places in the 2019 USL Championship Playoffs.  

“We’re just focusing on ourselves,” said Switchbacks Head Coach Alan Koch when asked if the Switchbacks would attempt to play the role of spoilers ahead of Saturday’s match.  “I think if we’d been together all season long we could use that as a motivator, but I think we’ve got enough motivation in terms of us assessing our own players and the players showcasing themselves so we’re just going to focus on ourselves.”

Mexican striker Éver Guzmán was named the USL Championship Player of the Week after notching the first hat trick in San Antonio FC’s history in a wild 4-3 win over the Portland Timbers 2 last Friday in the Rose City on the banks of the Willamette River.  Midfielder Walter Restrepo was also a starter on the Team of the Week alongside Guzmán. San Antonio FC have now scored eleven goals in their last four matches, with Saturday’s match at Toyota Field being the first game San Antonio have hosted since they defeated Fresno FC 2-1 on September 28th.

Switchbacks captain Jordan Burt was forced out of the Switchbacks’ 2-0 loss to the Tacoma Defiance in the 21st minute last Saturday night in northwestern Washington due to injury, but was hopeful of a return when asked about his status on Tuesday morning.  “I don’t know right now, but I will try to play,” said Burt. “It’s a day-to-day thing right now but I want to finish this season and finish what we started.”

“Firstly: just familiarity.  Get to know the players, get to know the staff, obviously get settled,” said Switchbacks Head Coach Alan Koch when asked about his focus for the final weeks of the 2019 USL Championship season.  Koch will take charge of the Switchbacks for the first time during Saturday’s match in Tacoma. “We’re certainly not going to reinvent the wheel in the next two weeks, but slowly start to put in place some of my philosophical ideas in terms of how we want to play.  I was very happy with how the guys played and the plan Wolde put in place for the game on Saturday, so that gives us a bit of positive momentum and we’ll try to build on that and just enjoy the next two weeks with the guys while we’re evaluating and assessing. I think that’s the most important thing: evaluate and assess so we can build toward next year.”

“It was huge to get the win on Saturday especially as we need that boost and energy to finish the season,” said Rony Argueta.  “We definitely saw the energy of trying to impress the new coaching staff versus the Galaxy. The team was motivated and we played with positive energy and we need that again on Saturday.”

The Seattle Sounders – the Major League Soccer parent club of the Tacoma Defiance – will have the upcoming weekend off before they host FC Dallas in Round One of the 2019 MLS Cup Playoffs at CenturyLink Field in downtown Seattle on October 19th.

The Galaxy II face a short turnaround before Saturday’s match in Colorado Springs, as Head Coach Junior Gonzalez’s team will play against Sacramento Republic at Papa Murphy’s Park in California’s capitol city late Wednesday evening before making their way to the Rocky Mountains.  Heading into Wednesday’s match, Kai Koreniuk leads the Galaxy II in goals with nine, while Ethan Zubak and Augustine Williams each have seven goals. Zubak was named on the bench of the USL Championship Team of the Week after a brace in Los Dos’ 5-1 win over the Oklahoma City Energy FC on Saturday at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California.  

“We’ll watch and see what LA do tomorrow,” said Switchbacks Interim Head Coach Wolde Harris.  “They’ve been playing well this season and I don’t expect anything less from LA. Of course [Ethan] Zubak and [Augustine] Williams are dangerous players, but if we stay compact and communicate we’ll be in a good way to get a result.  We need to stay compact and slide together defensively and not give LA room in the middle of the park. Our guys should be motivated to compete – I’m looking forward to us bringing high-energy this weekend. Personally, I’d like to thank the fans for their support this season and we look forward to playing in front of them one last time.”

Los Dos’ last trip to high altitude ended in a 5-0 defeat at the hands of the Real Monarchs in Salt Lake City on March 23rd.  The Galaxy II and Switchbacks opened their respective 2019 USL Championship seasons on March 9th at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California, with the Switchbacks earning a 4-1 win behind a hat trick from Shane Malcolm.  Team captain Jordan Burt rounded out the scoring for the Switchbacks, while Ghanaian Geoffrey Acheampong notched the Galaxy II’s only goal in the 86th minute.

The Galaxy II face a short turnaround before Saturday’s match in Colorado Springs, as Head Coach Junior Gonzalez’s team will play against Sacramento Republic at Papa Murphy’s Park in California’s capitol city late Wednesday evening before making their way to the Rocky Mountains.  Heading into Wednesday’s match, Kai Koreniuk leads the Galaxy II in goals with nine, while Ethan Zubak and Augustine Williams each have seven goals. Zubak was named on the bench of the USL Championship Team of the Week after a brace in Los Dos’ 5-1 win over the Oklahoma City Energy FC on Saturday at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California.  

“We’ll watch and see what LA do tomorrow,” said Switchbacks Interim Head Coach Wolde Harris.  “They’ve been playing well this season and I don’t expect anything less from LA. Of course [Ethan] Zubak and [Augustine] Williams are dangerous players, but if we stay compact and communicate we’ll be in a good way to get a result.  We need to stay compact and slide together defensively and not give LA room in the middle of the park. Our guys should be motivated to compete – I’m looking forward to us bringing high-energy this weekend. Personally, I’d like to thank the fans for their support this season and we look forward to playing in front of them one last time.”

Los Dos’ last trip to high altitude ended in a 5-0 defeat at the hands of the Real Monarchs in Salt Lake City on March 23rd.  The Galaxy II and Switchbacks opened their respective 2019 USL Championship seasons on March 9th at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California, with the Switchbacks earning a 4-1 win behind a hat trick from Shane Malcolm.  Team captain Jordan Burt rounded out the scoring for the Switchbacks, while Ghanaian Geoffrey Acheampong notched the Galaxy II’s only goal in the 86th minute.  

“For me, thinking back on how it felt to get that win – every week you want to feel that way,” said Jordan Burt.  “You always want to go out of a season on a positive note. This week we’re going to put in a lot of work to make it an exciting game.”

We play for them, and we haven’t been living up to expectations – their expectations and our own – and Saturday is an opportunity for us.”  The Guam National Team will follow the match in China with a trip to Dubai to face Syria on Tuesday, October 15th at the Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum Stadium in the United Arab Emirates.  Syria will be listed as the home team for the match against Guam, with the game to be played in Dubai due to the ongoing Syrian Civil War.

Las Vegas have multiple weapons that can hurt us, so it’ll take a collective effort to stop them. This weekend will be a lot about us and how we perform.”

“The next two days at practice we will focus on our defensive shape and how we press collectively,” said Diego Zaltron.  “The intensity in our game is there, but we need to hammer how we’re going to press and the key roles of each player. It will be intense this week – individual and group defending for the first few days, and Thursday and Friday will be more on our attack and being organized when we attack.”

Four Corners Cup action returns this weekend as the Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC head to the Land of Enchantment to face New Mexico United at Isotopes Park.  The Switchbacks tied high-flying Austin Bold 1-1 at Weidner Field last Saturday behind a great goal from Honduran striker Cesar Romero.  

Romero started the match against Austin as part of a two-pronged Switchbacks attack alongside Fernando González Delfin, and it was Delfin who combined beautifully with Romero as the Switchbacks took a first-half lead.  “It was great to help us score and it was important to me, but to me I would like to get a win,” said Delfin on Tuesday morning in Colorado Springs. “This weekend we want to get the win and improve.”

“We need to work together as a team on offense and defense against New Mexico,” said Switchbacks Interim Head Coach Wolde Harris.  “We made changes last weekend to keep the quality of our game up, and they helped. But lapses in concentration came back and bit us.  We had chances to put the game away but again just a couple lapses in concentration really hurt us.”

Former Switchbacks striker Kevaughn Frater scored a hat-trick for New Mexico United on May 18th at Weidner Field as Frater’s new team ran away 3-1 winners in a game that saw Mike Seth score for the hosts.  Frater leads New Mexico United in goals with fourteen, while Galician striker Santi Moar has scored ten times for Head Coach Troy Lesesne’s team in the 2019 USL Championship season.

Santi Moar, [Josh] Suggs, and [Manny] Padilla are all players that we have to watch, and of course we have to be very mindful of [Devon] Sandoval and Kevaughn Frater too.  Those two guys can be very dangerous when New Mexico get the ball out wide so that’s another thing that we need to watch closely.”

Dead Man’s Brew Fest, sponsored by Powers Liquor Mart, iHeart Media, and Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers, returns to Weidner Field on September 27th with tickets and further information available HERE.  Following Saturday’s match in Albuquerque, Wolde Harris’ team will face off against the El Paso Locomotive FC at Southwest University Park in far-west Texas on September 21st.  A bobblehead giveaway, courtesy of Fox 21 News, will greet fans upon the Switchbacks’ return to Weidner Field on Saturday, September 28th against the Las Vegas Lights FC, with tickets remaining available HERE.  

“At this moment it’s difficult for us to make the playoffs, so we’re playing for pride right now,” said Switchbacks center back Jamal Jack.  “I was injured last time for the game against New Mexico and I hope I can be out there on Saturday. We’re just trying to achieve points to get as high as we can in the table – that’s our focus right now.  We’ll need to play well on Saturday.”
