Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC Win on the Road to Open 2020 Season

Oklahoma City, OK (March 7, 2019) – The Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC picked up all three points on the road in the season opener with a 2-1 win over the Oklahoma City Energy FC Saturday night.

Christian Volesky got the Switchbacks on the board first in the 16th minute against his former club. Aidan Daniels set the goal up with a ground cross from the right side of the box that found the foot of Volesky before his initial shot was saved and he finished the rebound.

Energy FC found an equalizer in the second half when Atiba Harris got his head on a cross from a free-kick. The Switchbacks would find the eventual winner in the 78th minute when Uvaldo Luna fired in a low cross and Energy FC defender, Tucker Stephenson, turned the ball into his own net. The visitors would see out the lead for a 2-1 win on the road to open up the 2020 USL Championship season for the Switchbacks.

The Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC home opener is set for March 14th where the team will face San Antonio FC in a rematch of 2019's final game of the season that resulted in San Antonio missing the playoffs. Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC 2020 Preseason In Review

Back-to-back preseason wins have the Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC primed to begin the 2020 USL Championship regular season next Saturday evening against the Oklahoma City Energy FC at Taft Stadium in the Sooner State.

“It’s been a good preseason,” said Sebastian Anderson who scored one of the Switchbacks’ four goals as the Switchbacks ran away 4-2 victors on Sunday afternoon against the University of Denver at Weidner Field.  “We flew to Utah and some of the games weren’t our best, but spending time together 24/7 was super helpful. We bonded as a family and that helped us a lot. It was good to come home today and get a result – the team is coming together and to get the win today was good for us.”

The Switchbacks were greeted by chilly and windy conditions upon returning to Colorado Springs from their exploits in the Wasatch Winter Cup in Salt Lake City.  On Saturday the Switchbacks defeated the Air Force Falcons 1-0 on the campus of the United States Air Force Academy before hosting the University of Denver on Sunday afternoon at Weidner Field. 

“It’s not the coldest Switchbacks game I’ve been to, but it’s close,” said a bundled-up Brittany Sharp, who watched the game on Sunday alongside her family.  “We came to every home game before we had our baby and now we make it as frequently as we can. The players are the most important thing to us – how invested they are with the fans and how they know us and our daughter by name, that means a lot to us and I don’t think you can get that anywhere else.”

Wintery conditions forced the cancelation of the Switchbacks’ planned preseason match against New Mexico United at the University of New Mexico Soccer Complex on February 8th, but didn’t hamper the trip to Utah for the Wasatch Winter Cup in which the Switchbacks played three games.

Just six players on the 2020 roster have previous experience with the Switchbacks as integrating new faces has been one of the keys of the preseason.  “We’ve done a lot of team bonding experiences,” said Head Coach Koch. “Going to Utah was positive from that perspective. We’ve been trying to integrate the group as best as possible.  We get together in the morning, we train, and then afterwards we spend time together after training sessions. We have meals together as a group and we’re trying to build a new culture. The group’s come a long way, it really has, but I always want more time.  Preseason is a challenge at the best of times, but when you bring in as many players as we’ve brought, it takes time and it makes you realize that building a team truly is a process.”

Colorado Springs, CO (March 1, 2020) – The Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC defeated the University of Denver 4-2 at Weidner Field on Sunday afternoon in the final preseason game leading up to the 2020 USL Championship season.

Coming off of a 1-0 win over the Air Force Academy on Saturday, the Switchbacks were looking to keep the momentum going for the teams opening game in the USL Championship on March 7th in Oklahoma City. Mamadi Camara opened the scoring just after the half-hour mark by smashing home a cross that found it's way across the box.

The Switchbacks doubled the lead after Austin Dewing ran through the defense and finished his own rebound. DU pulled a goal back before Colorado Rapids Academy player, Will Vint, snuck a free-kick inside the near post to extend the Switchback's lead to 3-1. Sebastian Anderson extended the lead when his left-footed shot curled around the keeper into the side netting. DU added a second goal four minutes from full time.

"The most important thing this weekend was minutes," said Switchbacks Head Coach, Alan Koch. "Obviously, we played a lot of players yesterday, and we played a lot of players today to get 90 minutes for as many players in the group as we could. But it's obviously nice to finish with victories on both days."

With today's win, the Switchbacks' end preseason with a 3-2-1 record before focusing on the regular season.

Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC Break Ground for Downtown Stadium, Unveil New Logo, & Open 2021 Deposits

Colorado Springs, CO (December 7, 2019) – The Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC made history in Colorado Springs on Saturday night as the club broke ground on a new Stadium and revealed a new crest and color scheme in Downtown Colorado Springs.

"Words can't describe how pleased I am to see this project break ground after six years of effort. The downtown stadium is a game-changer for Colorado Springs on many levels," said Switchbacks President, Nick Ragain.

The Downtown Stadium will be a multi-use facility that can accommodate a variety of sporting and entertainment events. Located at the CityGate property, the Downtown Stadium site is bordered by Cimarron St. to the North, Moreno Ave. to the South, Sierra Madre St. to the West and Sahwatch St. to the East. The strategic downtown location allows for high visibility, access to amenities, and special experiences for participants and spectators.

Ed Ragain and Dean Weidner are partnering with GE Johnson and Perkins & Will to build the stadium in Downtown Colorado Springs. The facility will serve as the permanent home for the Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC with an anticipated 8,000 seats. It will encompass a synthetic turf field with organic infill for competition and an approximately 145,500-square-foot stadium overall. The Switchbacks FC are a part of a $2.3 billion downtown redevelopment including the new US Olympic and Paralympic Museum.

The Downtown Stadium will play host, along with the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and the NCAA, to the NCAA Division II Men's and Women's Soccer Championship in 2021. The championships, which are typically held a weekend apart in early December, is the first prestige soccer event added to the new venue's schedule.

"Having a downtown stadium is a win for the club and the community. The Switchbacks are an ambitious organization with a bright future and this stadium will help boost the club from both an economic and competitive standpoint," said Chief Operating Officer of the USL, Justin Papadakis.

The Switchbacks will open play in the Downtown Stadium in the Spring of 2021 for the USL Championship season.

Blue and black will feature as the primary colors for the club while grey and white will serve as the accent colors.

"The outer 'S' shape (displayed in blue) is subtle and it has always been a part of the Switchbacks mark but here we are drawing more attention to it. Ultimately the 'S' shape is the intended focal point as the letter 'S' is central to names 'Springs' and 'Switchbacks', plus the shape of a switchback is an 'S'," Ragain added.

The core of the logo emphasizes the "S" shape flowing right to left to right to left portraying the movement of the switchback roads that mark the climb to Pikes Peak. The outline of the shield is broken to reveal the letter "S" standing for "Springs" and "Switchbacks".

The peak of the logo is a symbolic representation of Pikes Peak and the scenic, mountain backdrop from the Colorado Springs view.

The five stripes represent the five military bases in Colorado Springs that make up our community.

Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC Defy Odds to Complete Comeback in Season Finale

San Antonio, TX (October 19, 2019) – Down a man and down two goals, the Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC battled back for a gritty 2-2 draw on the road to San Antonio FC in the 2019 season finale.

The Switchbacks came out as the aggressors in the early stages of the game. The pressure nearly paid off as Austin Dewing scored off his back from a corner kick that was judged to be offside in the opening five minutes. At the half-hour mark, Abdul Rwatubyaye was shown a red card for a tackle inside of the penalty area. Pecka buried the penalty to give San Antonio the lead as the Switchbacks would have to play the final 60 minutes down to 10 players.

San Antonio was awarded another penalty shortly after half-time, this time Jack Barmby finished from the spot to give the hosts the 2-0 lead. Jordan Burt found himself high up the field in the 68th minute as he put in a hard cross on the ground that Ebenezer Ackon turned into his own net to pull a goal back for the Switchbacks. With only seven minutes from full time, Ish Jome whipped in a free-kick to a rising Tucker Bone who headed home his first professional goal to equalize for the Switchbacks. San Antonio had the ball in the back of the net late, but it was also judged to be played by a player in an offside position. Bone's first professional goal proved to be the deciding goal that pushed San Antonio FC below the playoff line at full time, as current results had New Mexico United beating the Las Vegas Lights FC 1-0 at half time.

Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC Fall On the Road Behind Two Second-Half Stoppage Time Goals

Tacoma, WA (October 12, 2019) – The Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC fell on the road 2-0 to the Tacoma Defiance behind two goals in second-half stoppage time on Saturday night at Cheney Field.

In Alan Koch's first game in charge, the Switchbacks were looking to pick up points away from home in the penultimate game of the 2019 USL Championship season. The Switchbacks created the majority of the chances on the night with Matt Hundley and Saeed Robinson's shots from distance being saved by Trey Muse in the first half.

In Alan Koch’s first game in charge, the Switchbacks were looking to pick up points away from home in the penultimate game of the 2019 USL Championship season. That's the way football is in the first 15-20 minutes of the game, you have to be on your toes to be proactive and not reactive. I'm happy of the fact that the guys didn't mentally switch off. That's something that we talked about in pregame. Putting a complete performance together is more so on the concentration and focus side than on the physical side, it's really mental. If they can be in tune with each other mentally for most of the time, then I think we can keep compact defensively and offensively we will make better decisions on the ball. I think that's what transpired today. Mistakes are always going to happen in the game, it's really about how you respond."

On Matt Hundley's performance and scoring his first professional goal: "I'm extremely proud of Matt. He hasn't always had the best performances, especially over the last couple of games, he's been up and down. Obviously going from one team up with the Rapids back to here and back and forth isn't easy for a kid his age psychologically to stay on top of his game. Coming off back-to-back away games, the Switchbacks were looking turn results around at home. After a cagey first half, the second half when the first chance fell to the foot of Fernando Gonzalez Delfin who directed his shot on target but the ball was headed off the line by Javan Torre. Las Vegas got on the board first as Preston Etaka laid a ball off for Irvin Parra who tucked his shot inside the far post with a powerful strike. Cesar Romero had the best chance of finding an equalizer as he got behind the defense but his first shot was saved by Adam Hobbs and the rebound was put just wide. Las Vegas extended their lead to three in quick succession after Etaka got behind the defense and Parra pounced on a quick turnover to score his second of the night. Abdul Rwatubyaye pulled one back for the Switchbacks in the second minute of stoppage time with a powerful header from Ish Jome's cross.
 

"It was a really tough game. It was a little bit of a microcosm of the season," said Man of the Match, Ish Jome. "We played well in the first half and we had a few chances. I think we had better chances on goal than they did but we didn't capitalize on ours and the mistakes in the back cost us the game."

On the importance of next weekend’s last home game of the season: “For me personally, this is my club. I love the Switchbacks, I love the fans here, they’re like my family. So for me personally, next weekend, the last home game of the season, we have to get a result. We have to win. I want to do that for the fans. I want to do that for the club. I want to give back as much of what the fans have given to me. Something to smile about going into next year. It’s been a lackluster season and we need to send them off with a win.”

Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC Drop Result On The Road To El Paso Locomotive FC

El Paso, Texas (September 21, 2019) – The Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC lost 2-0 to the El Paso Locomotive FC from a goal in each half on Saturday night at Southwest University Park.

Jordan Burt nearly scored in a second consecutive game when he found a yard of space to direct his header on target but Logan Ketterer kept the ball off the line with an outstretched hand. El Paso took the lead in the 22nd minute when Bryam Rebellon controlled a cross before smashing his shot over the onrushing Abraham Rodriguez. Matt Hundley had a solo effort at the beginning of the second half to set up a shot from distance but the ball dropped just too late as it clipped the top of the crossbar on the way over. The hosts doubled their lead in the final minute of the game from a counter-attack that set up an Omar Salgado cross to Alexy Bosetti that ended the game and officially ended the Switchbacks' hopes of making the playoffs in 2019.

The Switchbacks return to Weidner Field on September 28th to face the Las Vegas Lights FC on Bobblehead Giveaway Night. The first 500 fans in attendance will receive a free Switchbacks bobblehead courtesy of FOX21 News. Full 16oz beers will be available for $1 for the first 30 minutes after gates open at 5:00 PM. Tickets start at just $12 and are available HERE. For the price of a Switchbacks ticket and 2-5 beers, it is cheaper than buying 2-5 beers at a bar or restaurant.
