Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC Staff Attend Winter Summit

The Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC staff were in Orlando, Florida in December for the United Soccer League's Winter Summit. The league-wide event was the largest of its kind with more than 750 attendees from across the USL.

The annual event has become one of the most popular in the USL's calendar, with tailored programming for attendees that offer insights, new ideas, and discussion platforms in the areas of operations, ticketing, merchandise, communications, and social media, among others.

Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC Sign Arturo Diz Pe

Colorado Springs, CO (January 10, 2020) – The Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC announced today that the club has signed Adrián Arturo Diz Pe, pending USL Championship and USSF approval.

"Thank you for the opportunity to defend the shirt and to thank the technical staff," said Diz Pe. "I feel very excited to work hard and get the best results in this 2020 season."

Diz Pe, 25, played for local Cuban teams, Las Tunas and Ciudad de la Habana, before Santos Laguna of Liga MX (Mexico) signed him after a friendly match. The center back has most recently played for the Portland Timbers 2 since 2018. During his time in Portland, Diz Pe appeared in 37 matches, tallying a goal and three assists as a defender.

Diz Pe has made 13 appearances (9 starts) for the Cuban National Team and he was a part of the Cuban team that won the 2012 Caribbean Cup.

"We are incredibly excited to have Arturo join us in Colorado. He has USL experience after his time with Timbers 2, is an athletic defender, and has the technical ability to play the style of soccer we want to play this year," said Switchbacks Head Coach, Alan Koch. "Alan Koch is a coach that I had and know for quite some time from my time back in Vancouver in the MLS. I know that the Switchbacks are an ambitious team and I'm coming with my experience and knowledge to try and help the team push into the playoffs and push for a title in 2020."

Lewis, 25, is a creative attacking midfielder with USL Championship experience. He was a standout for the Jamaican U-17 and U-20 youth teams before playing for Portmore United in Jamaica. Lewis was drafted 7th overall in the 2014 MLS SuperDraft by the Vancouver Whitecaps FC (MLS) before being loaned out to the Charleston Battery (2014) and Vancouver Whitecaps 2 (2015). The Jamaican native played for Portland Timbers 2 from 2016 to 2018 before spending the 2019 season back with Portmore United. In his professional experience, Lewis has eight goals in 107 appearances.

Lewis also has three caps for the senior Jamaican National Team after making his international debut against Honduras in February 2017.

USL Championship Unveils 2020 Schedule

Special 10th anniversary season will see 595 games played over 33-week schedule

TAMPA, Fla. – The complete schedule for the 10th anniversary season of the USL Championship was announced by the United Soccer League today with 35 teams set to play 595 regular season contests over 33 weeks ahead of the 2020 USL Championship Playoffs that begin in October.

As previously announced, the 2020 campaign will open on the weekend of March 6-8 with a 16-game slate that includes a marquee matchup Saturday, March 7 when expansion side San Diego Loyal SC hosts Las Vegas Lights FC at Torero Stadium.

The opening weekend begins a 34-game regular season for every club in the league that will see each team in both the Eastern and Western Conferences play home-and-home contests against every opponent in their respective division. In the 17-team Eastern Conference, the remaining two games of the schedule will be completed with contests against regional rivals.

The regular season will conclude on Saturday, October 17 with 17 contests that will see the final playoff places and seeding decided ahead of the postseason. Among the high-profile contests slated for the final day of the campaign is a Western Conference clash between Sacramento Republic FC and Phoenix Rising FC at Papa Murphy’s Park and an Eastern Conference showdown between Louisville City FC and North Carolina FC at Lynn Family Stadium.

Overall, 385 games in the 2020 USL Championship regular season will be played on Saturdays, with a total of 509 games – 85 percent of the league’s schedule – being held on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

Following the conclusion of the regular season, the top 10 teams from both the Eastern and Western Conferences will qualify for the 2020 USL Championship Playoffs, which will open with the Eastern and Western Conference Wild Card Round on Wednesday, October 21. The Eastern and Western Conference Quarterfinals will then be held between October 24-25, the Eastern and Western Conference Semifinals between October 30-November 1 and the Eastern and Western Conference Finals between November 6-8.

The 2020 USL Championship Final to conclude the league’s 10th anniversary season will be held between November 12-16 and aired on an ESPN broadcast network.

Volesky, 27, has extensive USL Championship since his debut in 2015. The forward has scored goals at every stop in his career, Rochester Rhinos (20), Saint Louis FC (9), Oklahoma City Energy FC (9), and the Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC (3).

The Denver University and Southern Illinois University Edwardsville product was drafted by the Portland Timbers in the second round of the 2015 MLS SuperDraft before he eventually signed with Rochester in the USL Championship. During his time at Rochester, Volesky led the team in goals as a rookie in 2015 (8) and again in 2016 (10) in the USL Championship.

In 2017, the Henderson, Nevada native finished second in goals for Saint Louis FC, finding the back of the net eight times.

Volesky began the 2018 USL Championship season with Saint Louis FC before being traded to the Oklahoma City Energy FC midseason. In just 22 appearances with Energy FC, he scored nine goals.

Most recently with Pittsburgh in 2019, Volesky recorded three goals and an assist in 24 appearances for the Riverhounds before joining the Switchbacks.

"Christian is a striker that I have watched from afar for several years. He has a very good goalscoring record in USL, but I don't think he has peaked yet," said Switchbacks Head Coach, Alan Koch. TAMPA, Fla. – The 2020 national broadcast schedule for the USL Championship across ESPN networks was released today featuring 20-plus games on ESPN2, ESPNews and ESPN Deportes in the league’s 10th anniversary season. Coverage runs from March through November and will include 19 regular-season games and the 2020 USL Championship Final on ESPN linear television networks.

The first of eight games on ESPNews takes place the opening weekend of the Championship season, pitting San Diego Loyal SC and Head Coach Landon Donovan against Las Vegas Lights FC and Head Coach Eric Wynalda at Torero Stadium in San Diego as the hosts compete in their first competitive game on Saturday, March 7 at 10:30 p.m. ET.

As part of the new rights agreement reached between the USL and ESPN this past August, the Championship will have Spanish-language coverage of 10 games on ESPN Deportes, beginning with the Tampa Bay Rowdies hosting Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC on Friday, March 27 at 7:30 p.m. ET.

The league’s ESPN2 coverage kicks off on Wednesday, April 29 when Memphis 901 FC welcomes the Charleston Battery to AutoZone Park before San Diego Loyal SC returns to host El Paso Locomotive FC on Wednesday, August 12 at 10 p.m. ET.

Overall, more than 590 games from the USL Championship will air on ESPN+, the industry-leading direct-to-consumer sports streaming platform, with coverage beginning on the opening day of the season, Friday, March 6. In addition, ESPN+ will feature more than 170 games from USL League One when its season kicks off on Friday, March 27.

Colorado Springs, CO (January 7, 2020) – The Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC announced today that the club has signed Joan Cervós, pending USL Championship and USSF approval.

"I'm very excited to start playing for the team," said Cervós. "I think it's a great opportunity and I will give all that I can to contribute to the team to achieve good results."

Cervós, 21, most recently has played for FC Andorra in the Segunda Division B, the third tier of soccer in Spain. The young left back has made 47 appearances in his professional career with FC Andorra and FC Santboiá since his debut in 2017.

In International play, Cervós has made two appearances for the Andorran senior national team after playing for the various youth national teams since 2013.

USL Championship Announces 2020 Home Openers

10th Season to kick off March 6 with 16 games slated for opening weekend

TAMPA, Fla. – The United Soccer League today announced the home openers for all 35 clubs in the USL Championship, with the league’s 10th anniversary season set to kick off on Friday, March 6.

The 2020 campaign opens with a Friday doubleheader that will feature three teams that reached the postseason in the Western Conference last season, with Orange County SC set to host El Paso Locomotive FC in the opening game at Championship Stadium in California before Tacoma Defiance takes on Reno 1868 FC at Cheney Stadium.

The first Saturday of the season contains plenty to watch for, too, with perennial playoff contenders North Carolina FC hosting Louisville City FC and the New York Red Bulls II hosting the Tampa Bay Rowdies. In the Western Conference, Real Monarchs SLC will open its title defense on the road against San Antonio FC, while two sides that reached the postseason in their inaugural seasons will kick off their second campaigns when Austin Bold FC hosts New Mexico United.

The weekend’s marquee matchup arrives late on Saturday night when expansion side San Diego Loyal SC, led by Landon Donovan, hosts Las Vegas Lights FC and Head Coach Eric Wynalda as the former U.S. Men’s National Team legends square off on the sidelines for the first time.

Other notable home openers include the first game at home for defending champion Real Monarchs SLC, which welcomes 2019 Regular Season Title-Winner Phoenix Rising FC to Zions Bank Stadium on Saturday, March 14, while Miami FC and the Tampa Bay Rowdies will meet for the first time in the USL Championship on Friday, March 13 at Riccardo Silva Stadium.

Louisville City FC will be the visitor for two early 2019 Eastern Conference playoff rematches as it visits Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC on Saturday, March 21 at Highmark Stadium and then takes on Indy Eleven on April 4 at Lucas Oil Stadium. The two-time champion will then open its new 11,700-seat Lynn Family Stadium on Saturday, April 11 as it plays host to Birmingham Legion FC, kicking off a new era for the club as it aims to reach the USL Championship Final for an unprecedented fourth consecutive season.
