Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC Fell To Las Vegas Saturday Night

Colorado Springs, CO (September 28, 2019) – The Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC fell to the Las Vegas Lights FC 3-1 in a wild second half in front of 4,279 fans at Weidner Field Saturday night.

Coming off back-to-back away games, the Switchbacks were looking turn results around at home. After a cagey first half, the second half when the first chance fell to the foot of Fernando Gonzalez Delfin who directed his shot on target but the ball was headed off the line by Javan Torre. Las Vegas got on the board first as Preston Etaka laid a ball off for Irvin Parra who tucked his shot inside the far post with a powerful strike. Cesar Romero had the best chance of finding an equalizer as he got behind the defense but his first shot was saved by Adam Hobbs and the rebound was put just wide. Las Vegas extended their lead to three in quick succession after Etaka got behind the defense and Parra pounced on a quick turnover to score his second of the night. Abdul Rwatubyaye pulled one back for the Switchbacks in the second minute of stoppage time with a powerful header from Ish Jome's cross.
 

"It was a really tough game. It was a little bit of a microcosm of the season," said Man of the Match, Ish Jome. "We played well in the first half and we had a few chances. I think we had better chances on goal than they did but we didn't capitalize on ours and the mistakes in the back cost us the game."


The Switchbacks are back for the final game in 2019 at Weidner Field on October 5th to face LA Galaxy II on Fan Appreciation Night. The first 1,000 fans in attendance will receive a free Switchbacks Drink Koozie courtesy of Creative Consortium as well as the fourth and final poster in the 2019 series. Full 16oz beers will be available for $1 for the first 30 minutes after gates open at 5:00 PM. Wolde Harris – On what he saw in tonight's game: "I think we got our chances tonight early and didn't take them, and they got their chances late and put them in the net. That's the story of football. You have to take your chances when you get them."

On what needs to change ahead of next weeks home finale: "A lot more energy, to start. We need more positive energy going forward. I think we were a little slow with the ball tonight, moving the ball between the lines. And we need to be better at that. To put people out of the game and get the ball wide like we did in the first half, we didn't do that in the second half."

On the importance of next weekend's last home game of the season: "For me personally, this is my club. I love the Switchbacks, I love the fans here, they're like my family. So for me personally, next weekend, the last home game of the season, we have to get a result. We have to win. I want to do that for the fans. I want to do that for the club. I want to give back as much of what the fans have given to me. Something to smile about going into next year. It's been a lackluster season and we need to send them off with a win."

Vargish's View: Colorado Springs Switchbacks Return Home For Rematch With Las Vegas

A wild week at Weidner Field starts this Friday evening as the Dead Man’s Brew Fest returns, with tickets and information available HERE.  On Saturday, the Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC host the Las Vegas Lights FC in USL Championship action, with the first 500 fans receiving a Luke Vercollone bobblehead, courtesy of FOX 21 News.  

Tickets for Saturday’s contest at Weidner Field are available HERE, as the Lights FC hunt a place in the 2019 USL Championship playoffs.  At the time of writing, the Lights FC stood in 14th place in the USL’s Western Conference – just four points out of a playoff spot.

Switchbacks Assistant Coach Diego Zaltron and General Manager Brian Crookham took charge of Tuesday morning’s practice in Colorado Springs alongside Goalkeeping Coach Trey Harrington, as Interim Head Coach Wolde Harris missed the session at the Pride Soccer complex.  “Wolde is tending to a family matter but he should be back later in the week,” said Crookham. “We are in constant contact with Wolde – he’s got a good handle on what’s going on despite not physically being here. We’re looking at these first few days of this week and evaluating some minor health issues and making sure we have a game plan against a team that will come and be desperate for a win.  We need to step up and take advantage of our home field and score some much-needed goals. Las Vegas have multiple weapons that can hurt us, so it’ll take a collective effort to stop them. This weekend will be a lot about us and how we perform.”

“The next two days at practice we will focus on our defensive shape and how we press collectively,” said Diego Zaltron.  “The intensity in our game is there, but we need to hammer how we’re going to press and the key roles of each player. It will be intense this week – individual and group defending for the first few days, and Thursday and Friday will be more on our attack and being organized when we attack.”

On Monday afternoon, the Switchbacks announced the hiring of Alan Koch as their next Head Coach, with further information available about Koch HERE.  

Irvin Parra scored a brace on May 11th as the Lights defeated the Switchbacks 3-0 at Cashman Field in Sin City, and Parra leads Las Vegas in goals with eleven and in assists with six.  Cameroonian striker Tabort Etaka Preston is second on Vegas’ scoring charts with six goals, while former University of San Diego Toreros standout Thomas Olsen is the Lights’ undisputed number one goalkeeper.  

Hall of Famer and former United States men’s national team striker Eric Wynalda will lead the Lights into Colorado Springs to face a Switchbacks team that will be without their team captain, Jordan Burt due to yellow card accumulation.  Burt received his fifth yellow card of the 2019 USL Championship season in the 51st minute of Saturday’s match in far west Texas as the Switchbacks fell 2-0 to the El Paso Locomotive at Southwest University Park.

Colorado Springs, CO (September 23, 2019) – The Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC announced today that the club has appointed Alan Koch as the second permanent head coach in club history. Koch joins the Switchbacks FC with extensive experience in the USL Championship after earning the league's Coach of the Year award with FC Cincinnati in 2018.

"We selected Alan because not only is he an amazing coach with USL Championship Coach of the Year credentials, but he's excited to paint Colorado Springs black and blue as we crescendo into the most important outdoor sports project in the history of Colorado Springs," said Switchbacks President, Nick Ragain.

Koch earned the 2018 USL Championship Coach of the Year award in his second year at FC Cincinnati's helm by leading the club to a 23-3-8 overall record as they set USL single-season records for points (77), wins (23), and games unbeaten in the regular season (23) en route to winning the USL Regular Season Championship.

"I am excited to join the Switchbacks and be a part of a very special project. There is a lot of assessing and evaluating that needs to happen in the short-term as we begin to put in place the plan for the 2020 season," said Koch. "I am also thrilled to be part of the next phase of the club as we prepare to move into the new downtown stadium in 2021. We will work incredibly hard to achieve the goal of getting the club back into the playoffs."

Koch has experience coaching at nearly every level of the U.S. Soccer pyramid. Koch started turning heads when he coached Simon Fraser University in the NAIA and NCAA to five consecutive conference championships and Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) Coach of the Year awards from 2009 to 2013.

In his first professional coaching experience, Koch led the Vancouver Whitecaps 2 from second-bottom in the Western Conference in 2015 to the USL Championship Playoffs and Western Conference Final in 2016. He was also in charge of scouting and developing young talent, including Alphonso Davies who progressed to an MLS contract with Whitecaps FC before transferring to legendary German club Bayern Munich.

In his first year with FC Cincinnati, Koch led the team to the Semifinals of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, defeating Major League Soccer's Columbus Crew SC and Chicago Fire. The run, which came to an end at the hands of the New York Red Bulls in a game that went to extra time at Nippert Stadium, marked the first time since 2011 that a USL Championship club had reached the final four of the historic tournament.

In 2018, Koch completed his United States Soccer Federation "A" Coaching License while also setting records with Cincinnati. Koch stayed with FC Cincinnati through the club's transition into their MLS expansion season in 2019 where he was awarded MLS Coach of the Week honors in weeks 3 and 4.

Interim Head Coach Wolde Harris will continue to lead the squad through the October 5th game against LA Galaxy II at Weidner Field before Alan Koch takes over for the final two away games of the 2019 season, at which point Harris will resume duties as Assistant Coach.

El Paso, Texas (September 21, 2019) – The Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC lost 2-0 to the El Paso Locomotive FC from a goal in each half on Saturday night at Southwest University Park.

El Paso took the lead in the 22nd minute when Bryam Rebellon controlled a cross before smashing his shot over the onrushing Abraham Rodriguez. Matt Hundley had a solo effort at the beginning of the second half to set up a shot from distance but the ball dropped just too late as it clipped the top of the crossbar on the way over. The hosts doubled their lead in the final minute of the game from a counter-attack that set up an Omar Salgado cross to Alexy Bosetti that ended the game and officially ended the Switchbacks' hopes of making the playoffs in 2019.

Vargish's View: Colorado Springs Switchbacks Head To El Paso For First Time

For the first time in their history, the Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC head to The Sun City as they face the El Paso Locomotive FC this Saturday evening at Southwest University Park in far west Texas.  

El Paso return home for Saturday’s match after a mini two-game road trip that started with a 3-0 win against the Las Vegas Lights on September 7th at Cashman Field.  The Locomotive fell 2-0 to Orange County SC last Saturday evening at Championship Soccer Stadium on the site of the former Marine Corps Air Station El Toro in Irvine, California.  

Berlin-born former United States international Jerome Kiesewetter leads the Locomotive in goals with eleven and notched a brace in El Paso’s 2-0 win over the Switchbacks at Weidner Field on May 4th in Colorado Springs.  Colombian Sebastián Velásquez remains the on-field general who dictates El Paso’s pace of play from midfield alongside Irishman Richie Ryan.  

For the first time in their history, the Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC head to The Sun City as they face the El Paso Locomotive FC this Saturday evening at Southwest University Park in far west Texas.  

El Paso return home for Saturday’s match after a mini two-game road trip that started with a 3-0 win against the Las Vegas Lights on September 7th at Cashman Field.  The Locomotive fell 2-0 to Orange County SC last Saturday evening at Championship Soccer Stadium on the site of the former Marine Corps Air Station El Toro in Irvine, California.  

Berlin-born former United States international Jerome Kiesewetter leads the Locomotive in goals with eleven and notched a brace in El Paso’s 2-0 win over the Switchbacks at Weidner Field on May 4th in Colorado Springs.  Colombian Sebastián Velásquez remains the on-field general who dictates El Paso’s pace of play from midfield alongside Irishman Richie Ryan.  

“We have to deny Kiesetwetter service,” said Switchbacks Interim Head Coach Wolde Harris. “Again, it will be important that we stay compact in the middle and not allow Velásquez to create.  [Omar] Salgado and [Nick] Ross are two players that we have to deny space so our compactness is going to be a big issue this weekend. We need to turn over the ball high against El Paso and get in behind them when we do.  At times on Saturday we looked good and we created chances but we weren’t as consistent and dangerous as we’d like to have been. We’ve seen El Paso on film and it looks like it will be another place that’s got a good atmosphere – this week we’ll need to stay positive and go there knowing that it will be a challenge.  We’ll see how this week goes – as a team we have the capacity to do well on the road in this league; we just have to make sure that we don’t allow mistakes to cost us. If we can cut out some of the things that have hurt us, we’ll be ok.”

Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC Drop Result In First Trip To New Mexico

Albuquerque, New Mexico (September 14, 2019) – The Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC lost on their first trip to face New Mexico United 3-1 on Saturday night behind Devon Sandoval's hat trick.

New Mexico United got on the board first when the ball fell to Devon Sandoval on the top of the box as he struck a half-volley off the far post and into the back of the net in just the 8th minute. The Switchbacks had two golden opportunities in quick succession to level the score when Saeed Robinson's shot came back off the far post and Fernando Gonzalez Delfin hit his rebound off the opposite post. Sandoval bagged his second goal just two minutes after halftime by finding himself in a 1-v-1 with Abraham Rodriguez before sneaking his shot underneath the keeper. Sandoval completed his hat trick with a glancing header that found its way inside the back post. The Switchbacks found a second wind that started with a corner kick sent in from Ish Jome that Jordan Burt rose up to head home his seventh goal of the season. Colorado Springs' were unable to convert a couple of late chances to fall on the road 3-1 to New Mexico United.

Four Corners Cup action returns this weekend as the Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC head to the Land of Enchantment to face New Mexico United at Isotopes Park.  The Switchbacks tied high-flying Austin Bold 1-1 at Weidner Field last Saturday behind a great goal from Honduran striker Cesar Romero.  

Romero started the match against Austin as part of a two-pronged Switchbacks attack alongside Fernando González Delfin, and it was Delfin who combined beautifully with Romero as the Switchbacks took a first-half lead.  “It was great to help us score and it was important to me, but to me I would like to get a win,” said Delfin on Tuesday morning in Colorado Springs. “This weekend we want to get the win and improve.”

“We need to work together as a team on offense and defense against New Mexico,” said Switchbacks Interim Head Coach Wolde Harris.  “We made changes last weekend to keep the quality of our game up, and they helped. But lapses in concentration came back and bit us.  We had chances to put the game away but again just a couple lapses in concentration really hurt us.”

Former Switchbacks striker Kevaughn Frater scored a hat-trick for New Mexico United on May 18th at Weidner Field as Frater’s new team ran away 3-1 winners in a game that saw Mike Seth score for the hosts.  Frater leads New Mexico United in goals with fourteen, while Galician striker Santi Moar has scored ten times for Head Coach Troy Lesesne’s team in the 2019 USL Championship season.

Albuquerque native Devon Sandoval was named to the USL Championship Team of the Week on Tuesday after the former University of New Mexico Lobos striker scored a brace in New Mexico United’s 3-1 victory against the Oklahoma City Energy FC on Sunday at Taft Stadium.  Former Switchbacks captain Josh Suggs wore the armband for New Mexico United in Sunday’s win over OKC in front of starting goalkeeper, and former United States youth international, Cody Mizell.  

“Saturday is going to take everybody playing together,” said Harris.  “We need to keep our focus for the entire game and that will be a challenge in a good environment.  It will be a great atmosphere and we have to make sure we transition quickly, especially on defense.  New Mexico do a really good job of getting in behind teams so we have to make sure we’re organized. Santi Moar, [Josh] Suggs, and [Manny] Padilla are all players that we have to watch, and of course we have to be very mindful of [Devon] Sandoval and Kevaughn Frater too.  Those two guys can be very dangerous when New Mexico get the ball out wide so that’s another thing that we need to watch closely.”

Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC Battle Out 1-1 Draw With Austin Bold FC

Colorado Springs, CO (September 7, 2019) – The Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC battled out a 1-1 draw with Austin Bold FC in front of 4,850 fans at Weidner Field Saturday night.

The Switchbacks had the best chance of the opening 35 minutes when Rony Argueta hit a shot from distance that forced Diego Restrepo into a high save. The hosts broke the deadlock 4 minutes from halftime when Fernando Gonzalez Delfin played a low cross into Cesar Romero who smashed his shot over the head of Restrepo and into the back of the net. After a short lightning delay, the Switchbacks earned a penalty kick in the 65th minute from an Austin handball but Jordan Burt's attempt was saved by a diving Restrepo. In the 70th minute, Austin leveled the score when Gustavo Rissi rose up to head home a corner to force the two sides to split the points in a hard-fought draw.
 

"We want to take the most wins possible to win the most points possible so we can end well," said Fernando Gonzalez Delfin after his first appearance at Weidner Field. "We're looking forward to the next matches so we can get some wins."

Starting defensively, I thought we were compact and we were putting pressure on the other team to turn them over in key areas and we're able to create opportunities. I think we probably could've put away one or two more opportunities in the first half. After the rain delay, we created the penalty and that's where the game could've ended. To give up another set-piece goal, it's in some ways frustrating. That being said, the team didn't quit, we kept pushing forward. Our style of play didn't change. And the guys kept working so I'm proud of them for that. But obviously we wanted to win tonight, I thought we deserved it. But sometimes that's football, it doesn't go your way."

On starting Delfin & Romero up top together: "We've seen them playing together in training. The communication aspect is there as well, they both speak Spanish. They both have the right skill set to play the position. I think with 2 [forwards] now, it posses more of a threat for the opposing defense. We're able to shift the defense out of position and hold the ball up so other people can join. It paid dividends; one found the other and they scored. We just have to look to build on that going forward."

Vargish's View: Colorado Springs Switchbacks Finish Home Stand Against League Newcomers

It’s Hero Night at Weidner Field on Saturday as the Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC host the Austin Bold in USL Championship action.  The first 500 fans through the gates will receive a foam finger, courtesy of Children’s Hospital Colorado, Colorado Springs. Last Saturday at Weidner Field the Switchbacks fell to Phoenix Rising FC as the visitors extended their historic winning streak to 17 matches by defeating the Switchbacks 3-0.  Things were not all doom and gloom for the home team, with 21 shots being registered by the Switchbacks against a Phoenix side who are the first team to clinch a berth in the 2019 USL Championship playoffs.  

“That we play better than last weekend!” was Switchbacks Interim Head Coach Wolde Harris’ response when asked what changes he wants to see at Weidner Field on Saturday.  “We’re focused on the details and we know that we’ll have to play well to start the game and not just in the second half like we did against Phoenix. Everyone will have to give maximum effort – Austin are a very good squad.  We’ve got a couple guys on international duty and they’re two experienced players that we’ll be missing. There’s a chance we may play some younger players this weekend, but we’ll see.”

“Coach told us that this week he’ll be looking at players who want to play and to give everything we have,” said Rony Argueta on Tuesday morning in Colorado Springs.  “And he said it doesn’t matter about age or experience – he’s looking for guys to get the job done. It’s a new game on Saturday and it’s an opportunity to get a win and take care of the details that we’ve been working on and all the things that coach has been telling us.”

Austin Bold, who at the time of writing sit in 4th place in the USL Championship’s Western Conference, defeated the Switchbacks 5-0 at Bold Stadium on June 29th behind a brace from Brazilian striker André Lima.  

“Lima and Kleber are very experienced in this league,” said Wolde Harris.  “[Kris] Tyrpak up top too. Those guys – among others – can all cause problems, so we have to be compact and make sure we focus on our approach.  This week we’ll get back to work and make sure we know that we still have the ability to execute and do well.”  

It’s Hero Night at Weidner Field on Saturday as the Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC host the Austin Bold in USL Championship action.  The first 500 fans through the gates will receive a foam finger, courtesy of Children’s Hospital Colorado, Colorado Springs. Last Saturday at Weidner Field the Switchbacks fell to Phoenix Rising FC as the visitors extended their historic winning streak to 17 matches by defeating the Switchbacks 3-0.  Things were not all doom and gloom for the home team, with 21 shots being registered by the Switchbacks against a Phoenix side who are the first team to clinch a berth in the 2019 USL Championship playoffs.  

“That we play better than last weekend!” was Switchbacks Interim Head Coach Wolde Harris’ response when asked what changes he wants to see at Weidner Field on Saturday.  “We’re focused on the details and we know that we’ll have to play well to start the game and not just in the second half like we did against Phoenix. Everyone will have to give maximum effort – Austin are a very good squad.  We’ve got a couple guys on international duty and they’re two experienced players that we’ll be missing. There’s a chance we may play some younger players this weekend, but we’ll see.”

“Coach told us that this week he’ll be looking at players who want to play and to give everything we have,” said Rony Argueta on Tuesday morning in Colorado Springs.  “And he said it doesn’t matter about age or experience – he’s looking for guys to get the job done. It’s a new game on Saturday and it’s an opportunity to get a win and take care of the details that we’ve been working on and all the things that coach has been telling us.”

Dutch defender Edson Braafheid was named a starter on the USL Championship Team of the Week after he helped the Bold keep a clean sheet in a 3-0 over the Rio Grande Valley FC Toros on Sunday evening in Texas’ capitol city.  André Lima was rewarded for his 60th minute goal and overall performance against the Toros with a place on the USL Championship Team of the Week bench. 

Lima leads the Bold in goals with ten, with Austin-native Kris Tyrpak having notched seven goals in the 2019 season.  Kleber has scored six times for the Bold, and former Switchback Sean McFarlane leads Head Coach Marcelo Serrano’s team in assists with six.  USL Championship veteran Diego Restrepo recorded his eighth clean sheet of the league season in the shutout win over RGV. Former US youth international Amobi Okugo and Jamaican international centurion Jermaine Taylor have each played over 2,000 minutes for the Bold in the 2019 league season, with midfield general Xavier Báez also moving over the 2,000-minute mark after his 90 minutes in Sunday’s victory against the Toros.

Colorado Springs, CO (August 31, 2019) – The Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC lost 3-0 to table-toppers Phoenix Rising FC behind three first-half goals on Saturday night at Weidner Field.

Phoenix came out of the gate hot scoring two goals in the first eight minutes of the game. Jose Aguinaga saw his pass get deflected back into his path before slotting his shot past the onrushing Andre Rawls. Solomon Asante intercepted a pass to give himself the space needed to score his league-leading 20th goal of the season. The visitors extended their lead to three in the 27th minute behind Adam Jahn's blast inside the near post. The Switchbacks had an opportunity late in the half on a counter-attack after Saeed Robinson's cross found the head of Austin Dewing but he couldn't direct the header on target.

Eight minutes into the second half, Rony Argueta was in the right place at the right time to find a cross that got partially saved by Zac Lubin before seeing his shot get cleared off the goal-line by a Phoenix defender. Cesar Romero had an opportunity fall to him when he fired a low shot towards the far post but Lubin got down quick enough to make the save and preserve the 3-0 scoreline.
 

"They're a really good team. They possess the ball really well. They overload one side and they're able to keep the ball. They're very patient but at the same time they move the ball quick. To me, they're the best team in the league in both conferences," said Rony Argueta. "They capitalized on our mistakes. If we're solid in the back, I think we can avoid those goals. Second half we came out better and pressed them. I think if we would've done that from the beginning, it would've been a different game."

Wolde Harris – On the difference between the Switchbacks and Phoenix tonight: "They were playing as a team and we were playing as individuals. I think that's the biggest thing. We were playing in small groups and not together as a team. There was a noticeable lack of communication and that speaks to the core of the performance, we're not on the same page. I think our preparation going into the game was good. I think the attitudes we're good even in pregame, but it seems that our mentality isn't as strong as it should be to face a team like Phoenix right now." 

On how Phoenix's two early goals changed the game: "We knew it was going to be a test. We were poor with the ball tonight and a team like Phoenix will capitalize on those two mistakes early in our back four. They were up 2-nil and that doesn't bode well for your psychology going forward for the rest of the game. But credit to the guys who kept fighting, kept playing, and created more chances. Yeah we kept playing, but in terms of our matchup with them, they're a well-oiled machine right now. They're not a team that you can make the mistakes that we made tonight."

Unfortunately, we dug ourselves a hole and when you dig yourself a hole against a squad like that, it's going to be even harder to come back. Take nothing away from how good they are, we didn't do ourselves any favors."
