The Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC fell to New Mexico United 3-1 behind Kevaughn Frater's hat trick on Saturday Night in front of 4,151 fans at Weidner Field.

Coming off of the 1-0 win in the U.S. Open Cup on Wednesday night, the Switchbacks were hoping to use the win to springboard results in league play as well. However, New Mexico got on the board first when a tackle sent the ball right to Kevaughn Frater inside the box who calmly finished by Switchbacks keeper, Andre Rawls. In the 35th minute, Josh Suggs saw his shot parried by Rawls, but the rebound fell right to Frater who scored his second of the match.

The Switchbacks would cut the deficit in half in the 63rd minute when Mike Seth turned in a cross from Alex Molano from close range. However, New Mexico restored the two-goal lead when Kevaughn Frater bagged his hat trick after rounding Rawls and finishing off the game 3-1 for the visitors.
 

"I thought we had a couple of opportunities and they had a couple of opportunities and they took advantage of theirs and we weren't able to recover," said Switchbacks forward, Mike Seth. "It's just how things are going right now."
 

The Switchbacks are back on the road to face the OKC Energy FC on May 25th. The Switchbacks return back to Weidner Field on Wednesday, May 29th for a rematch with New Mexico United in the third round of the U.S. Open Cup. The Switchbacks' next home league game is June 1st when Fresno FC comes to town on cap giveaway night to the first 1,000 fans in attendance, courtesy of Pikes Peak Brewing Company. Full 16oz beers will be available for $1 for the first 30 minutes after gates open at 5:00 PM. Steve Trittschuh – On his overall thoughts on the game: "The guys are giving their effort out there. Most of them, this was their third game in a week. And really, we have no depth. It's tough right now. You look at a team like New Mexico and they're a good, experienced team. They're trying to go after a championship and they've put together a good team. We're limited right now in what we can do but we have to keep pushing forward. We had a lot of chances to go on goal and we gave up three soft goals. We have to keep going forward. The guys that are here are what we have to deal with. Right now, there's no depth. I had one attacking player tonight on the bench as a sub, and he's a 19-year-old kid. It's tough, but it is what it is. There's nothing that I can do to change it but we just have to keep going forward."
On adjustments to play New Mexico again in 11 days in the U.S. Open Cup: "There's no adjustments. It's the 12 or 13 guys we have on the roster right now that will have to step up. For the Open Cup, we'll get some academy players from the [Colorado] Rapids; but like I said, that's relying on 16 and 17-year-old kids. We just have to keep pushing forward, that's all that we can do."

I thought we were on top of them and we had the chance to come back into the game after getting the crowd back into it. Unfortunately, we gave up another goal late and that was it."
On his assist tonight: "It was good to finally get some kind of stats. I just tried to hit it on target and luckily it went to Mike and he put it away."

Colorado Springs, CO (May 15, 2019) – The Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC defeated FC Denver 1-0 in the second round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Wednesday night.

Coming off of the loss in Las Vegas, the Switchbacks were looking to jump-start their 2019 season in the Open Cup on Wednesday night. Matt Hundley created multiple chances in the first half but he couldn't beat FC Denver keeper, Jacob Peterson, in the first half. Just before halftime, Kwasi Donsu turned and fired a shot from 30 yards into the bottom left corner to give the Switchbacks the lead. The Switchbacks controlled the tempo of the game in the second half to see out the 1-0 result and move on to the next round.
 

"First of all, I want to thank God and our supporters. They always support us," said Switchbacks midfielder, Kwasi Donsu. "It was a good game for me because it was my first goal for the Switchbacks. I'm very happy I scored a goal and we won."

The Switchbacks will either travel to Phoenix Rising FC or host New Mexico United in the third round of the U.S. Open Cup on May 29th, depending on who wins their matchup later Wednesday night.

You look at the scores of the teams that played a lower division team, it's hard. It's hard to play teams like that. They were very direct and so we had to battle tonight. A win's a win, so hopefully we take that into this next weekend.
On playing a tough team in New Mexico United in just three days: "They're a good team. They're resting all of their starters [tonight], so we'll have to be ready. We're a little bit lean right now and the guys have to get their legs under them for Saturday."
