April Spotlight: Switchbacks FC Ride Strong Form Across League and Cup Competitions
The Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC closed out April with a busy and successful stretch across the USL Championship, U.S. Open Cup, and USL Cup group stage, highlighted by strong results, standout individual performances, and multiple league honors.
April began with a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Lexington SC at Weidner Field. After falling behind early, the Switchbacks controlled much of the match through possession and sustained pressure, eventually earning a point thanks to Khori Bennett, who calmly converted from the penalty spot. The match set the tone for a disciplined and organized month of play.
The momentum continued in the U.S. Open Cup Round of 32, where Colorado Springs delivered one of their most complete performances of the season in a 3-0 win over Sporting Kansas City. The Switchbacks dominated possession and chances, with Sadam Masereka playing a key role in attack, scoring once and assisting another, as the club advanced to the Round of 16 for the first time in team history. Goalkeeper Christian Herrera added a clean sheet to cap off a statement win.
In league action, the Switchbacks put together a dominant 4-1 victory over Monterey Bay FC, controlling the match from start to finish. Adrien Perez opened the scoring with a brilliant long-range free kick, while Khori Bennett added two goals and Masereka continued his influence in the final third. The team’s attacking depth and sharp finishing were on full display in one of their most complete performances of the month.
April concluded with a 1-0 win over Phoenix Rising FC in USL Cup group stage play. A scrappy but decisive finish from Isaiah Foster off a set-piece sequence secured all three points, as the Switchbacks managed the game with strong defensive structure and controlled possession.
Across the month, Colorado Springs were rewarded with multiple honors:
- Khori Bennett – USL Championship Team of the Week (Week 5) + USL Championship Team of the Week Bench (Week 7)
- Adrien Perez – USL Championship Team of the Week (Week 7)
