Yesterday, Steward Ceus, Jordan Schweitzer, and Uriel Macias visited Mountain Vista Community School in Harrison School District 2 to read to the students for their “Reading with Role Models” program. Jordan Schweitzer enjoys being a role model saying, “It’s a privilege, as an athlete you have a platform to speak from and any time I can be a positive role model for these kids, it’s a great opportunity.” The Switchbacks players took turns reading soccer books such as “Princess Fidgety Feet” and “Wonder Goal!” to 200 kids between kindergarten and fourth grade.
Once the players were done reading, the children had the chance to ask any questions they wanted, and they ranged from soccer, other jobs, eating habits, and of course their favorite Disney characters. The advice the players had was that practice makes perfect and working hard can allow you to accomplish anything you set your mind to. “It means a lot, to be a positive role model for the kids. Show them that hard work can get them there someday,” midfielder Uriel Macias said.
Doing things in the community mean a lot to the players. “It’s a major part of why I play the game, to give back and be able to encourage kids to continue on the path of education and working hard,” goalkeeper Steward Ceus said.
