Colorado Springs, CO (June 29, 2016) – The Colorado Springs Switchbacks defeated the Real Monarchs SLC 1-0 Wednesday night.
After falling to the Real Monarchs on Sunday, the Switchbacks wanted to come back with more intensity in their rescheduled match from earlier in the year. After controlling the early portions of the game, Miguel Gonzalez was able to find Jordan Burt on the left side who was able to fire off a shot and score his first of the season.
“We played them five times last year, our second time this year; we know each other very well,” said Burt. “We’re a very physical team and our focus is to win every individual battle.”
The second half would prove to be just as physical as the first half. Both teams had their fair share of opportunities, but neither could quite pull off a second half goal. The Real Monarchs nearly found an equalizer just into stoppage time but Luke Vercollone prevented the ball going in with a goal line clearance. The Switchbacks would hold on to win the match and even the series between the Rocky Mountain rivals pushing them into second place (26 pts) in the Western Conference with a game in hand of Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 (29 pts). Tonight’s shutout marked the 7th clean sheet victory for the Switchbacks.
“I thought they turned it around from the game on Sunday,” said Head Coach Steve Trittschuh. “I was very happy with the defensive side of the game. We had to change it up a little bit without Christian [Ibeagha] but I thought they did well and we’ll take the three points at home.”
The Switchbacks will travel to the pacific northwest to face Portland Timbers FC II on Thursday, July 7th (8:00 PM MT) and then Seattle Sounders FC 2 on Sunday, July 10th (6:00 PM MT). Both matches can be seen on https://www.switchbacksfc.com.
The Switchbacks will return home on July 12th for the first ever International Friendly at Switchbacks Stadium as they take on German Bundesliga side 1. FSV Mainz 05.
The Switchbacks will return home for USL action on July 16 at 7:00 PM for Cancer Awareness Night and post match fireworks.
