Colorado Springs, CO (July 29, 2017) – The Switchbacks defeated Seattle Sounders FC 2-1 in front of a crowd of 4,042 for their first win since June 24th.
Looking to get back to winning form, the Colorado Springs Switchbacks hosted Seattle Sounders FC 2 at Weidner Field Saturday night. Heading into the match the Switchbacks sat in 7th place, just one point ahead of 8th place Sounders FC 2. The Switchbacks got off to a strong start putting the pressure on Sounders FC 2 early on. Finally, Masta Kacher broke down the left side and found Shane Malcolm who slotted it home. The Switchbacks would double their lead in the 33rd minute as Masta Kacher's corner was deflected by Francisco Narbon for an own goal. Despite a late effort by Seattle, the Switchbacks were able to head into halftime with a 2-0 lead.
Seattle would cut the Switchbacks lead in the 51st minute as Zach Mathers took a free kick from just outside the box to beat Moise Pouaty to make it a 2-1 game. Both sides would have their fair share of chances, but both goalkeepers held firm with Pouaty making three saves for the Switchbacks and Meredith making 6 for Seattle. The match also saw the return of Switchbacks original Davy Armstrong, who made his first appearance of the 2017 season, come on for Jordan Burt who had to come out due to an injury. The Switchbacks would hand on to the lead to take the 2-1 victory over Seattle earning their first victory since defeating then-undefeated San Antonio FC on June 24th at Weidner Field.
"It was a good win, but we made it harder than it should have been," said Head Coach Steve Trittschuh. "We allowed a bad goal, which can't happen. We've got a lot work to do but it was a good win."
"It was a huge win for us tonight," said man of the match Masta Kacher. "Getting a win at home after a tough road test was a huge team win that we can build on."
The Switchbacks return to Weidner Field next Saturday, August 5th to face Portland Timbers 2. The first 500 fans in attendance will receive Switchbacks FC backpacks courtesy of Colorado Technical University. Tickets start at just $12 and are available here.
