Colorado Springs, CO (October 7, 2017) – The Switchbacks kept their playoff hopes alive by defeating Sacramento Republic FC 1-0 thanks to Kevaughn Frater's first-half goal in front of 3,860 fans.
The Switchbacks headed into Saturday night's contest against Sacramento Republic FC needing a win to keep their playoff hopes alive. The Switchbacks got off to a strong start, pressuring the Sacramento defense early on and controlling the midfield. After a lot of back and forth action, Josh Suggs finally broke down the left side and found Kevuaghn Frater who slotted it into the far corner to give the Switchbacks a 1-0 lead. Despite a late effort by Sacramento, the Switchbacks were able to head into the break up 1-0.
Sacramento used up their final substitutions within the first 15 minutes of the second half, hoping to bolster the attack. Sacramento would continue to apply pressure on the Switchbacks but a combination of strong midfield presence by Rony Argueta and Taeseong Kim and backline work shut down the Sacramento attack. Both sides had a couple of dangerous free kick opportunities with Sacramento getting one in stoppage time but Dan Jackson was able to come up with a huge save to keep the clean sheet. The Switchbacks would hold on to the 1-0 lead and keep their playoff hopes alive as they move into 9th place for the moment.
"That's what we're capable of," said Head Coach Steve Trittschuh. "They had a solid game for 90 minutes. If we play like this earlier in the season, we're sitting pretty sweet. But, it's almost too little too late. We head to Tulsa next week and we'll see what happens with OKC because it all comes down to them."
"It was wonderful to get a win for the fans at our last home match," said Man of the Match Kevaughn Frater. "I'm very grateful to be here and to give back to the fans tonight."
With Tulsa defeating Seattle, the Switchbacks will now need OKC Energy FC to fall to Swope Park tomorrow afternoon to keep their playoff hopes alive. A win by OKC will eliminate the Switchbacks from the 2017 USL Playoffs.
The Switchbacks will now head on the road to face Tulsa in their regular season finale on Saturday, October 14th at 6:00 MP MT. The Switchbacks will need a win, along with an OKC loss to Swope Park (tomorrow) and Seattle (October 15th) and need Orange County to lose or draw to Reno (tonight) or Vancouver (October 13th) to make the playoffs.
