The Switchbacks scored a penalty kick and conceded a penalty kick to draw against San Antonio FC 1-1 on a wet night at Weidner Field in front of 3,879 fans.
After beating Portland on the road and Fresno at Weidner Field last weekend, the Switchbacks were looking to win their third straight game on Saturday night. The game started two hours after originally scheduled due to lightning and hail which slowed the game down. Jordan Burt proved to be the thorn in San Antonio's side as he got behind the defense for an early opportunity in the 4th minute but he put his shot just wide of the far post. San Antonio created a few chances of their own but Steward Ceus made multiple big saves to keep the score 0-0. Going into stoppage time at the end of the first half, Shane Malcolm found the ball at his feet when he was taken down in the penalty box to earn the Switchbacks a penalty. Jordan Burt stepped up and sent Diego Restrepo the wrong direction and buried his penalty to put the Switchbacks ahead 1-0 at the half.
The second half started with another big save from Steward Ceus, resulting in another man of the match performance from the Switchbacks' goalkeeper. But in the 66th minute, San Antonio earned a penalty and Rafael Castillo finished his opportunity to level the game. For the last 24 minutes, each team had opportunities from distance but nothing came of them. Colorado Springs and San Antonio would be forced to split the points as each team scored their penalty kicks.
"Overall, I did my best to stay mentally prepared with everything going on, with the [weather] delay," said Man of the Match, Steward Ceus. "I just wanted to make sure I started sharp and fortunately, I was able to come up big in a few instances."
The Switchbacks stay home on July 3rd to face Orange County SC on Independence Day Fireworks Extravaganza night where the first 1,000 fans in attendance will receive a scarf courtesy of Oakwood Homes. Tickets start at just $12 and are available here. Fans 21+ can get $1 beer the first 30 minutes when gates open at 6:00 PM.
