Switchbacks forward, Shane Malcolm, has been called up to the Guam National team to compete in Qualifying for the 2019 East Asian Football Federation Championship starting September 2nd in Mongolia.
Malcolm, who qualifies to play through his paternal grandmother, has over 20 caps for the Guam National Team since 2014, scoring twice, both times during the EAFF E-1 Football Championship, an international competition in East Asia for member nations of the East Asian Football Federation (EAFF). His first goal came in a 2-1 victory over Chinese Taipei during the 2014 competition, and his other came in 2016 during a 3-2 loss to Hong Kong.
Earlier this year, Malcolm became the first Switchbacks player in club history to be called up to play for his national team as an active member of the Switchbacks. Malcolm currently has played in 26 games for the Switchbacks in 2018, totaling five goals and four assists on the season so far.
"Shane is in Japan and that's a loss," said Head Coach Steve Trittschuh. "He's been playing pretty well with a free role just in behind Toby [Uzo]. We wish we had him right now."
Malcolm will miss the Switchbacks' game tonight against the Real Monarchs at Weidner Field as well as the game on Saturday, August 29th in Los Angeles to face the Galaxy II.
The Switchbacks are back at Weidner Field on Wednesday, August 29th to face the Real Monarchs. The first 500 fans in attendance will receive the last Switchbacks Poster of the 2018 series on 1980's Night courtesy of Centura Orthopedics. Tickets start at just $12 and are available here. Fans 21+ can get $1 beer the first 30 minutes when gates open at 6:00 PM.
