The Switchbacks overcame adversity to find a late goal from Saeed Robinson to down the Real Monarchs 1-0 on Wednesday night.
Coming off of a road loss to the Phoenix Rising, the Switchbacks were looking to get back into playoff contention at their home field against the top team in the Western Conference. The Switchbacks started the game as the aggressors, finding the back of the net twice from Marty Maybin and AJ Ajeakwa. However, both opportunities were judged to be offside along with Karsten Hanlin hitting the post against his former team meant the teams went into the half tied at zeros.
After the break, Jamal Jack made a 60-yard run to score for the Switchbacks, but he was caught offside in the 68th minute. The Real Monarchs would get their chance in the 81st minute, but their shot struck the crossbar. A quick goal kick in the 88th minute saw Josh Suggs find Saeed Robinson before Robinson put his curled effort by Monarch's keeper, Adam Grinwis. The second half substitutes goal proved to be the game winner.
"It's a good win against the top team in the league. That's just one step forward that what we have to do. We've got a lot more wins to go," said Switchbacks head coach, Steve Trittschuh. "I thought they played well tonight, especially against a lot of odds. But the guys kept their head down and did well tonight."
The Switchbacks are now on the road this Saturday in Los Angeles to face the Galaxy II. The Switchbacks return to Weidner Field on Saturday, September 15th to face Rio Grande Valley FC. The first 500 fans in attendance will receive a Switchbacks trucker hat on Super Hero Night, powered by Kaiser Permanente. Tickets start at just $12 and are available here. Fans 21+ can get $1 beer the first 30 minutes when gates open at 5:00 PM.
