The Switchbacks FC fell to the Phoenix Rising FC 2-1 on Saturday night in front of 4,871 fans in the last home game of 2018.
Coming off of the 1-1 tie to Rio Grande Valley FC last weekend, the Switchbacks were looking to keep their playoff hopes alive with a win on Saturday night. Phoenix took the lead 22 minutes in when Soloman Asante delivered a corner kick to the head of Joseph Farrell and Farrell nodded it home. The visitors would double their lead as Kevin Lambert found himself all alone in the box when he slotted the ball by Switchbacks keeper, Moise Pouaty, at the near post.
The Switchbacks came out with more energy after the break, being the aggressors early on. The home side would cut the deficit in half when a corner kick found its way to Saeed Robinson on top of the box and Robinson fired a hard shot low into the bottom corner of the net in the 66th minute. Just two minutes later, Jordan Burt's header hit the inside of the far post and Shane Malcolm's follow up was saved by Carl Woszczynski. The Switchbacks couldn't find the equalizer as the game finished 2-1; officially eliminating the Switchbacks from the possibility of making the 2018 USL playoffs.
"It's been frustrating. There are times we should be unbeatable and then there are times it seems like our bad decisions on the ball cost us," said Switchbacks Head Coach, Steve Trittschuh. "Every game we created enough chances and we do enough to win games, to tie games. And then we shoot ourselves in the foot at times and that's the frustrating part about it."
The Switchbacks FC are now on the road for three consecutive games to close out the 2018 USL regular season. The road trip starts on September 29th when the Switchbacks FC take on the Real Monarchs at Zions Bank Stadium in Herriman, Utah at 7:00 PM MT.
