The Switchbacks and Rio Grande Valley tied 1-1 on Saturday night in front of 4,064 fans at Weidner Field.
Coming off of the 3-1 road loss to the LA Galaxy II, the Switchbacks were looking to get back into playoff contention at their home field against the top team in the Western Conference. The first half started quickly for the Switchbacks as Jordan Schweitzer picked out Saeed Robinson and he scored in the second consecutive home game to give the Switchbacks the lead in just the 8th minute. Mason Toye would also get an opportunity in the 20th minute but his point-blank shot was saved by Michael Nelson before the ball rolled wide of the goal.
Rio Grande Valley equalized in the 71st minute through Nicolas Perea's header to the far post. Switchbacks goalkeeper, Moise Pouaty, got a hand to the header but he couldn't keep the ball out of the back of the net. Each team generated one more chance, but the keepers wouldn't be beaten for a second time as it ended 1-1 at Weidner Field.
"I think it's one we'll look back on as frustrating. I think we have them right where we want them at the start of the game. We go 1-nil up, it's a great finish by Saeed [Robinson]," said Switchbacks midfielder, Jordan Schweitzer. "We have the momentum and we have chances to finish that game off early. We allowed them to get back in the game. And then obviously they get one late in the game and now we're pushing. We'll take the tie, but we need to continue to get wins here towards the end of the year to make playoffs."
The Switchbacks are back at Weidner Field on September 22nd to face the Phoenix Rising in the final home game of the 2018 season. The first 500 fans in attendance will receive a Capelli hat on Margaritaville Night. Margaritas will be served for $3 all night long and the players will be wearing Margaritaville warmup jerseys that will be available for auction during the game. There will also be a fireworks show after the game. Tickets start at just $12 and are available here. Fans 21+ can get $1 beer the first 30 minutes when gates open at 5:00 PM.
