Following winning the Wasatch Winter Cup in Utah, the Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC continued their spotless preseason campaign with victory over the United States Air Force Academy on Tuesday afternoon in Colorado Springs. This Saturday the Switchbacks will finish their preseason preparations for the 2019 USL Championship season as they host the University of Denver at Weidner Field before heading to the City of Angels for a March 9th clash against the Los Angeles Galaxy II.
“I know DU will give us a good game – they’re a good team,” said Switchbacks Head Coach Steve Trittschuh on Wednesday morning. “We need to work on keeping up our speed of play like we’ll need to in the USL games. To get ready for LA, we have to keep doing what we have been all preseason: we’re playing good defense and we’re getting goals from different guys. A lot of guys are scoring goals, and that’s a good sign this early. I’ve said to the guys, ‘let’s not give up goals’ so that was big for us against a good Air Force team. We’re scoring goals and we’re creating chances. Our biggest problem last year was being able to make chances for ourselves, so I’m happy with where we are, but we have more work to do.”
The University of Denver Pioneers won the 2018 Summit League Championship last season by defeating the University of Nebraska Omaha in the final. DU garnered a 15th overall seed in the 2018 NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Tournament, before being knocked out by an outstanding Air Force Academy team in the second round.
“Against DU, we’ll continue what we’ve been doing in preseason,” said midfielder and University of Denver alum Jordan Schweitzer. “We continue to work on things that we’ve done well and we’ve got to be ready to carry the positive preseason into March. It’ll be nice to see some of the guys from DU…but we’re here to win the game.”
“I’m not trying to throw any shade, but I enjoy playing here, and this preseason has better than my old team,” said winger Saeed Robinson after the win against the United States Air Force Academy. “The preseason has been positive so far. We’ve had good results and that means a lot to us. I think for Saturday we are looking forward to playing on grass at our stadium and working on the things we’ll need to start the season.”
New faces could be on their way to Colorado Springs before the Switchbacks face the LA Galaxy II on March 9th at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California, with Head Coach Steve Trittschuh confirming the team is working on reinforcing the squad. “Before we go to LA it will be determined about some new loan players coming in. That will be big for us.”
Newly signed Switchbacks defender Kris Reaves opened the scoring against Air Force, while fellow newcomer Alex Molano impressed in midfield alongside Jordan Schweitzer and Rony Argueta.
“The guys have been working hard,” said Trittschuh. “There’s been no complaining about being out in the cold and the wind. We see all the other teams in warm weather and we’ve not heard any complaints from the players. It was a very professional environment in Salt Lake City [for the inaugural Wasatch Winter Cup] and we all saw that and our players keep working because we want to get a good start to the season. We’ll make sure we keep working on being good defensively and that we keep creating these chances that we have been in the preseason. We’ll do that against DU and take that with us to LA.”
“I’m looking forward to continuing gelling with the team and using the game versus DU to get a better identity before going into LA,” said Guam international winger Shane Malcolm. “It’s another game to work on ourselves and establish our identity and our togetherness.”
