Colorado Springs, CO (May 9, 2019) – The first round of the 106th edition of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup took place over Tuesday and Wednesday this week as nine winning teams advanced to the next round in pursuit of U.S. Soccer's national championship. FC Denver booked their spot in the next round for a meeting with the Switchbacks after defeating the Midland-Odessa Sockers FC (NPSL) 2-1 on Wednesday night.
The Switchbacks enter the tournament in the second round on May 15th. The matchup against FC Denver is a rematch of last years wild second-round game, a 3-2 win for the Switchbacks on May 16th, 2018.
The US Open Cup is one of the most unique tournaments in the world. Similar to the FA Cup in England, soccer teams from all levels are eligible to participate in the tournament. For the first time, all U.S. Open Cup matches will be available to watch on ESPN+.
