Colorado Springs, CO (September 29, 2020) – The Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC will play their final ever game at Weidner Field on Wednesday, September 30th at 7pm MT.
The Switchbacks have called Weidner Field (or Fortress Sand Creek) home since the club's inaugural season in 2015. Weidner Field has hosted over 85 USL Championship games and two USL Championship Playoff games in its six seasons.
Switchbacks defender Jordan Burt has been with the club every season since 2015. "There's been so many great games and so many great players that have played on that field and you always remember your last game at certain places, so I want to make it a good memory," said Burt.
Originally a park built in 1985, the Switchbacks performed a $3.0M renovation of the stadium that incorporated a 5,000 seat venue, press box, enhanced sports lighting, suite seating, broad cement concourses, restrooms, locker rooms, administrative offices, concessions, public Wi-Fi, and a LED display.
Sitting at 6,600 feet above sea level, Weidner Field has been the highest professional soccer stadium in all of the United States. "Wednesday will be something special for sure," said Switchbacks veteran Rony Argueta. "And not just for the few of us that have been here for quite some time now, but for everyone."
The Switchbacks will be moving into a state of the art stadium in Downtown Colorado Springs in 2021 for the USL Championship season. Construction on the 145,500-square-foot venue has continued throughout the year to have the 8,000 seat stadium ready for the Spring of 2021.
