Colorado Springs, CO (July 1, 2017) – The Switchbacks fell 0-1 to Rio Grande Valley FC Saturday night where Ruben Luna's penalty kick in the 67th minute was the deciding factor.
After a 80-minute rain delay, the Switchbacks came out with a strong start with a handful of early chances. While the Switchbacks only held 38% possession to RGV's 62%, the Switchbacks outshot the Texas side 7-0 in the first half. RGV made a handful of runs but the Switchbacks backline stood fir and held RGV scoreless at the break.
The second half was very similar to the first half. The Switchbacks looked the better side but weren't able to capitalize on any of their chances. The Switchbacks caught an unlucky break in the 67th minute as RGV earned a penalty which Ruben Luna converted. The penalty shot was the only shot by RGV in the match. Despite a last-ditched effort from the Switchbacks late on in the match, and out shooting RGV 15-1, they fell 0-1 for their fourth straight defeat to RGV.
"It was a tough loss tonight, that I take responsibility for," said Head Coach Steve Trittschuh. "I put the players out there and we didn't come up with the win."
"I thought we played really well tonight," said Captain Rony Argueta. "We got unlucky with the penalty kick, but I thought there were a lot of positives to take from tonight."
The Switchbacks will wrap up their homestand next Saturday, July 8th at 6:00 P.M. as they host Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 for the fourth poster series night presented by Kneaders Bakery & Cafe. Tickets start at just $12 and are available here.
