COLORADO SPRINGS, COLORADO (April 22nd, 2023) – The Colorado Springs Switchbacks found the win tonight as they took on New Mexico United at Weidner Field, finishing the match 2-1.
Both teams were looking for victory tonight, the Switchbacks working hard to bounce back after their loss to Sacramento and New Mexico United looking to start a streak after a patchy start to the season. With no goals scored in the first half, the name of the game for the Switchbacks was offense, who notched eight shots to New Mexico’s four, and held possession for 58.4% of the first half, and a huge 68.5% in just the first fifteen minutes. The Switchbacks have now held their opponent off of a first half goal in six of their last seven matches, more than any other team in the USL Championship.
New Mexico came out strong in the second half, scoring only one minute in as #11 Santi Moar found the back of the net despite some hard attempted save work by Switchbacks goalie #1 Christian Herrera.
An equalizer from the Switchbacks came from an unlikely source as New Mexico United’s #33 Harry Swartz fumbled a pass and found the back of his own team’s net. The Switchbacks would score the go ahead goal only two minutes later, as a back pass from #99 Maalique Foster to #80 Speedy Williams allowed him the chance to bounce the ball up to #12 Drew Skundrich who netted it in right inside the six yard box. The boys in black and blue would attempt a few more rushes in the final minutes of the match, and New Mexico would fail to find the equalizer, resulting in a 2-1 final score.
The Colorado Springs Switchbacks take to the road next week as they head East to take on Charleston Battery. They return home for a Cinco de Mayo celebration against El Paso Locomotive on May 5th.
