The 2023 season may have just wrapped up, but here at the Switchbacks we’re already gearing up for the 2024 season, and it’s going to be our biggest one yet! This upcoming season will mark the Switchbacks 10th season anniversary as a club in the USL Championship and we are so grateful to you, the fans, whose unwavering support over the past ten seasons has allowed us to grow into the organization we are today.
Started in 2015 by the Ragain Family, choosing Colorado Springs for a professional soccer team was a no brainer. Known as the ‘City of Champions’, Colorado Springs is home to so many outstanding landmarks in the sports world, and with city leaders eager to create a downtown stadium concept that embodied the ideals of a ‘City For Champions’ the Switchbacks were just what they needed. But we knew we wouldn’t be able to do it without a strong fan base, and that relationship was one that flourished right away, with the name of the team being chosen in a fan contest. This was a team whose appreciation for their fans was written into the very fabric of the name itself.
With two strong postseason appearances in their first two seasons with the USL Championship, the team struggled to find their footing, but they never struggled to find dedicated fans here in the Springs. And as the legacy of the team grew, and the fanbase swelled with it, so did our aspirations.
In December 2019, the Switchbacks broke ground on Weidner Field, a state of the art, 8,000 seat dedicated soccer stadium, nestled right into the heart of downtown. With the first ever FIFA approved corkonut pitch, and the Epicenter sculpture – whose creation is an embodiment of our community’s strong ties with the Olympics – our team and the city that supports it looked to create a landmark that would stand the test of time as it represented our city. In May of 2021, when we held our opening match in our new home, a sold out crowd let us know we were on the right track. And every season since that opener has been more exciting than the last. Our vision as a team has always been to elevate soccer in the Colorado Springs community, help develop and curate talented sports professionals, and inspire the community around us with our dedication to this league and its fans.
This season, as we celebrate our tenth season playing the world’s greatest game, we have a lot of tricks up our sleeves to make it special for our fans. Because without you, we wouldn’t be where we are today, and without you, we wouldn’t want to be. So keep your eyes peeled and your ears open, because this is going to be one season you won’t want to miss.
