The Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC begin a two-match road trip with a tough test on Thursday night in the Rose City against the Portland Timbers 2. A chance to further cement their standing among the USL’s Western Conference elite is on the line for the Switchbacks, who enter Thursday’s match in fourth place.
With third place Sacramento Republic FC hosting the Real Monarchs SLC on Wednesday at Bonney Field in California, the Switchbacks will enter their game against the Timbers 2 on Thursday evening having played at least two fewer games than each of the three teams they trail in the standings.
Three consecutive one-goal losses see the Portland Timbers 2 languishing in twelfth place. So far having split their home games in the 2016 season between The University of Portland’s Merlo Field and Providence Park of MLS’ Portland Timbers, the Timbers 2 will host the Switchbacks on Thursday night at Merlo Field. The Switchbacks defeated T2 1-0 at Merlo Field on September 5th of the 2015 season, as a Miguel Gonzalez strike was enough for the visitors to clinch three points.
Switchbacks players and coaches were adamant about the dangers posed by the trip to Oregon, despite the Timbers 2 having failed to notch a victory since a 2-1 result over the Swope Park Rangers on June 4th . “Portland are a good team and they always play well against us,” said defender JJ Greer. “They like to move the ball and they play the right way – it’s a nice brand of soccer they have up there. They’ve got speed up top and they try and play fast. Hopefully we can counter that by staying solid and we can take our chances going forward.”
“They’re a good team and they rely on their speed up top,” said Switchbacks Head Coach Steve Trittschuh when asked about T2. “They have individuals who can break down teams with pace so our defenders have to always be aware. We have to take care of their players up top – they’re good and they are really quick – and that will put us on the right track.”
Timbers 2 striker Kharlton Belmar has been in fine form this season, with Portland teammates Victor Arboleda and Neco Brett combining to form a powerful forward three. Brett currently leads the T2 stat sheets with four goals this season, while Belmar has added two goals and three assists. “We have to watch out – they can hurt us,” warned Switchbacks goalkeeper Billy Thompson during training in Colorado Springs before referencing the May 13th matchup between Thursday’s teams: “It should be a good trip out West and we have to go there prepared because Portland will be out for revenge against us.”
In addition to the attacking pace of the Timbers 2, the interchangeability of Portland’s offensive players causes matchup problems for the Switchbacks. Bulgarian midfielder Villyan Bijev has a keen eye for goal and a good understanding going forward with his teammates, especially with fellow midfielder Andre Lewis.
A cross-country trip to Harrison, New Jersey awaits MLS’ Portland Timbers on Sunday evening, which could cause roster movement for Thursday night’s T2 game against the Switchbacks.
An early second half goal from Mike Seth gave the Switchbacks a precious three points at Switchbacks Stadium against the Timbers 2 in May, but Switchbacks captain Luke Vercollone wants his teammates to forget about that result ahead of Thursday’s kickoff. “We must now just focus on what we need to do because it was a long time ago when we played the Timbers. This trip is a great opportunity to get 6 points in a few days, so we are all looking at that. Hopefully we can take our chances against Portland – it’s going to be tough, but we’re up for it and I hope we can get a little winning streak started this week.”
“The guys did very well against Portland here but that won’t affect Thursday too much,” said Head Coach Steve Trittschuh. “We need to keep the momentum from the win against Salt Lake City – especially how we created chances going forward. It’s fun to play in Portland because of the beautiful field. We played well there last year and that’s where we made the playoffs last season [September 5, 2015]. So hopefully we can keep the good vibes from last year going.”
In their last USL action, the Switchbacks split a two-game series with the Real Monarchs SLC at Switchbacks Stadium. A 1-0 victory for the Monarchs on June 26th was followed by the reverse result on June 29th . A powerful early first half volley from wing back Jordan Burt saw the Switchbacks return to winning ways in Colorado Springs and Burt honored with a place on the USL Team of the Week bench.
Equally comfortable on the right or left side of defense, Burt has established himself as one of the best defenders in the USL and a key component to the Switchbacks’ success.
“It felt really good to get the first goal off my back,” said Burt. “But more importantly it was great for the team to score early. That was a huge relief for us. It was really good to bounce back, and it was also extra special versus the Monarchs because we deserved more from the first game. Now we’re all focused on moving on for our games out West and getting ready for those as a group. It’s a big trip. Both teams are very good and we’re going to have to be ready. It’s going to be good to focus on getting two good results.”
Disappointment among the Switchbacks was palpable after the June 26th defeat to the Real Monarchs at Switchbacks Stadium. Undefeated in Colorado Springs heading into the match, the Switchbacks prioritized winning all their 2016 home games and must now look to build a new streak after their bounce-back last Wednesday.
“It was huge for our team – we needed the win against Salt Lake City [Monarchs] and we got one,” said defender Josh Phillips. “We need to win at home so it’s always great to get those three points in front of our fans and it sets us up great for our trip to Portland.”
T2 again hosts the Switchbacks at Merlo Field on August 3 rd , while the Timbers 2 will have to wait until 2017 for their next regular season opportunity to visit Colorado Springs.
Matches for the Colorado Springs Switchbacks are now starting to take place in clusters. Two games in four days await the Switchbacks on the west coast; with the travelers knowing six points pushes them ever closer to a priceless playoff place.
